RIP Chris Kyle

Whilst I'm not quite on elmarko's level of cynisism, it does bug me when soldiers are made out to be doing a job almost against their will and as if they don't like killing people.

I've seen and read enough from soldiers to know that do enjoy killing people, they talk about loving the adrenaline rush of the kill and how they stop seeing their targets as human beings.

People should watch "First Kill", a documentary about ex-soldiers and their experiences. Hearing them talk only shows me that whilst they are undoubtedly brave, I'm not sure 'heroic' is correct.

Here's a quick excerpt....

Bit of a sweeping generalisation.

My great grandfather, (Arthur Cox if anyone wants to look him up) was a bomb disposal expert (and from what I've heard and read, possibly in the secret service at one point) in WW2 and would never talk about it. So I seriously doubt that every soldier takes pleasure in killing.

True Shayper, but you don't get "150 confirmed sniper skills" unless you take some enjoyment out of doing it. Or rather, clearly it didn't bother him as he would have started to suffer from stress/guilt after a first few.

Or he was just doing a job he found necessary. How do you know he didn't feel guilt from every one?

Why not see if you can get a copy of his war record ?

Because this morning I just watched a rerun of his interview with O'Reily, where he candidly spoke about how much he loved doing his job and had zero regrets or negative emotions over the killing of other people.

I might just do that :)

In that case, I apologise. However, I was at no point glorifying him as some people have suggested, merely saying that I feel that he should not be disrespected.

Very sad news indeed :(,
Whats with all the negative comments?
If you didn't like the guy then don't bloody comment.
Met him once while training in canada, he was a very genuine down to earth guy and extremely good at his job.

And you know this how? I'm not having a go but until you've been in the situations a soldier fighting on the frontline gets into, you aren't really able to comment on how someone would deal with it.

And why would he? that's his job, the person your looking or brought your weapon to bare on is trying to kill you, its you or them.
As long as it's within the ROE, i can't see why you'd have any remorse.
Unless it's a young child etc.
I have a few friends that have been contacted by (kids), It is only in these contacts which they have great difficultly in dealing with after.

I wasn't making judgement, just answering your reply to Estebanrey about how we know his state of mind over the killings.

And to say 'it's just a job' - no, it is well known in the psychology of warfare that it is still not easy for the majority of soldiers to actually kill someone else, and the stresses this can cause individuals.

This Chris seems to be one of the ones who actually enjoyed killing.

And a lot of them were forced into it through propaganda. Again, it's the leaders to be blamed.

Forced my a***. You always have a choice. This man glorified in murder just like the nazi soldiers did when they killed the jews. Sick, sick people who will pay the price in due time.

Has anyone seen that video of US troops killing Afghan civillians and laughing about it? "Let us shoot 'em up" - like it's flaming video game!!!
