He was a legend but shouldn't be remembered for his later career, it wasn't bad or anything, its just his early career was monumental and important. He was pretty much "the" comedian to add current political situation stuff to his act, but for a reason not just for a joke. He started to criticise the Vietnam war in his acts and was amongst the first "famous" people to do so which was a very important step in the turnaround at the time of public opinion to the war. He did political/social commentary when it was a pretty big no no at the time to do so which took a lot of balls. Had to fight the FCC and a few court cases in free speech cases which were worthwhile and has generally just always been a really good guy.
Truly good person who did the right thing and brought up important topics despite a lot of criticism(at first) and losing a lot of money as he was dropped from TV shows, had performances canceled as people didn't want anti war/anti government content(again, at first). Did what he thought was right, took a lot of flak and helped change public opinion on some big subjects.
Big shame, but lived to a fairly grand age of 71 and will be remember for his work by a lot of people.
