Thought the sad passing of this legend deserved a thread.
D-Day veteran Harry Billinge has passed away aged 96. He was an 18 year old sapper when he stormed the beaches in 1944 and was one of only 4 in his unit to make it home.
For the next 60 years he sold poppies and fundraised for the British Royal Legion and raised many thousands. He was awarded with an MBE by the Queen. He also had the distinction of having a GWR train named in his honour.
I remember an interview he gave to the BBC on the anniversary of the landings. He gave the interview sitting on the beach where he landed all those years earlier and I the interview was harrowing but inspiring.
An absolute legend of a man. RIP Harry. God bless you.
