John, ‪83, was admitted to St Georges Hospital, London in February with an existing respiratory condition and after a short period in intensive care he passed away peacefully this afternoon. His wife, Jane and daughters, Leonora and Edwina were by his side.

Great Driver, F1 Champ in 1964. Aged 83.

Rest in peace champ.

No one will beat his record of being the only man to win the F1 title and the 500cc(now motoGP) bike title
RIP John, for once the term Legend is rightly used.
He was a seven-time motorcycling world champion, first winning at the 1955 Ulster Grand Prix and taking an incredible 38 wins from 49 Grand Prix start and taking not only the 1958, 1959 and 1960 350cc titles but also the premiere class 1956 1958, 1959 and 1960 500cc classes.

He left MotoGP behind in 1960, winning his last race at Monza, to embark on a career racing four wheels, winning the 1964 F1 championship for Ferrari and winning 6 F1 races.

Sometimes when you read or hear about the death of someone you think, that's sad............he or she was a nice person what a shame.
Where John was concerned, i think he was without doubt THE nicest person in motor racing. Over the last 40 years i've met him a number of times, he was funny, serious (at times), never forgot a person that he had spoken with, always loved motorsport, always stuck to his principles and remained devoted to the memory of Henry to the end.

RIP John, i will miss you.

To do what he did is the stuff of legends, as no-one will ever come close. Valentino Rossi, one of the absolute indisputable greats of motorsport couldn't/wouldn't break into F1 even with the backing and support of Ferrari, let alone win a F1 title - it says a lot about what a maestro Surtees was, especially considering some of the dogs he drove (and he won a race driving one of those dogs!).

Such a distinguished career yet due to the tragic death of Henry he'll also be remembered for his subsequent fundraising, awareness and safety campaigns - he's a hero of in so many different ways.

RIP John. Your legendary status has long been secured. Your posthumous knighthood will follow.

And I still can't work out why he wasn't when winning at tiddly winks seems to get a knighthood these days. What was good about surtees was his ability to connect with people, even today's f1 drivers and motogb riders. When his son died instead of drifting into despair he channelled his energies into the henry surtees foundation http://henrysurteesfoundation.com/ The likes of john surtees I fear will never be seen again, rip...
