i know it might seem weird having an RIP thread for an animal, but Koko was as close to a human as it’s possible to get without actually being one. She has sadly died aged 46.

She was taught sign language and could communicate with over 1000 hand signs. She met Robin Williams in 2001 and had an IQ approaching the IQ of many people. She also had a pet kitten and was said to have shown grief when the little kitten ran away and was killed by a car.

Truly an amazing animal, definitely worthy of an RIP thread imo. RIP Koko, I’m sure you will be sorely missed.

RIP

(ref IQ it is often pretty dubious in general but comparing the IQ of a gorilla with humans gets even sillier... I mean technically she's supposedly scored above the average IQ of plenty of African countries)

Her political views were controversial, but there's no denying the fact that she was a ground breaker.

RIP, Koko!

This really did, genuinely make me sad yesterday, to be able to communicate and get some insight into the mind of one of our closest ancestors is truly awe inspiring. She seemed to have a nobility that puts so much of the Homo Sapiens species to shame :(

That on the back of death of the oldest known Sumatran Orangutan Puan the other day as well (Yes I know Orangutans are on a different evolutionary path to the Hominid line) again such a noble being :(
