He was best known for playing Norm Peterson in the popular comedy series Cheers from 1982 to 1993.

Norm 
I never watched more than a few episodes here and there when it was on the first time. My dad used to watch it religiously along with fraiser. When my dad passed I started to watch through some of his old favourites and yeah what you said is completely true. He even gives Diane a bit of a slap in one episode.
Norm and Cliff are cheers to me, sad news.

I grew up with unconventionally older parents and siblings, so Cheers was a part of my life despite being born in 84. My brother is now in his 50's, but he visited the USA in his teens and has photographs of him outside of the bar.
As an aside, the spin off that is Frasier is my favourite sitcom.
