Rip off garage prices..........

Garage is gonna fit it for free then yeah? OP hasn't stated what they were actually planning to change.

Just how long do you think it takes to swap over a pipe, over £100 is a **** take, especially considering that only gets you 2 pieces.
You have an answer for everything though so no doubt there will be another stupid comeback.

Well it stands to reason that an indiviual is going to be a fair whack cheaper than a garage, which has overheads, staffing costs, etc.

Whilst I am not doubting your cousins ability, it's cash in his pocket. He will most likely not mark up parts, and probably gives you a very good rate on labour.

As for changing the entire exhaust system, most would say that it's subjective, some would replace the entire unit, it depends on your garage.
Are costs listed inclusive of labour?

So yes, going to a mate is cheaper. But there is a reason garages exsist and there is reason they charge more.

On a 206, likely mostly rusted bolts, would actually take some time to change it over, although £100 is a bit steep on labour.

Keep your knickers on. I was only explaining why it could be so high for 'just two pieces'. It's a bit steep but it's not like he's had a whole list of made up things thrown at him. You can also negotiate, the option is there to say hang on, why is that so expensive? I've done it a number of times.

The parts cost him £120 as he still has his card to get them what garages pay. It shows the mark up these garages put on parts.

We make about 6% on main dealer parts and 20% on motor factor items.

garages =/= charity, whats to say the garage quoted for the same brand or quality as what to what your cousin fitted. we have had quotes from different makers for the same component ranging from £168 to £311

Tyre prices are often related to how many you order, we order quite a few so get a nice discount but some may only make a few pound on each.

I know that garages have to make their money, and some garages are cheaper then others etc etc. But there is a big difference between £160 and £500 don't you think? My cousin said that they would have made at least £300 profit out of that £500 which i personally find excessive for less than an hours work.

For a start £65 of that was not pikeying your damaged tyre!

I know but for a start there was nothing wrong with the gaiter, just a clip was needed which cost a couple of quid. They wanted £75 + vat to replace the whole thing. Also the brake sensor was freed off with a squirt of wd-40 and they wanted £15 + vat. So you are talking about £110 for a 5 minute job for both.

Maybe they couldn't find the individual part number for the clip and thought it best to replace the whole unit rather than bodge it. Did you actually ask what they wanted to do or did you just run straight to the internet?

Best way to avoid this is to self-diagnose and then supply the parts yourself.

You can buy the clips separate like my cousin did. He mentioned that there was nothing wrong with the gaiter or brake sensor and that they were just trying it on. I mentioned it when i took my car back for the free re-test, but come on they aren't going to admit robbing people are they? Funny how they never failed the car seeing as my cousin never replaced the gaiter?

How did they know the gaiter was in good state of repair, your not allowed to clean anything up on an mot so they will quote higher prices and change the part.
Was the exhaust they were fitting a cheap aftermarket or a factory fit one?

There are many things to look at here.

My cousin knew straight away that the gaiter was ok when he looked at it so why couldn't they say that it just needed a clip? The funny thing was that they know my cousin but didn't realise he was related to me :D The guy started stuttering a bit which made me laugh.
