RIP Ravi Shankar

No way :( I was listening to one of his albums on the way back from London on the tube today. A true genius who put the sitar and Indian classical music on the map.

Very sad day.

R.I.P.

:(

I knew of his name but have never listened to his music. Obviously a very well respected musician though.

Also, I only found out yesterday that Norah Jones is his daughter! You learn something new every day.

Don't suppose he did the intro to Kula Shaker's Tattva did he? :p Always loved that intro, and the whole vibe to that album.

It looks like one but that's not a sitar playing the drone at the beginning. It's actually a tanpura which looks like a sitar but has less strings (usually 4, sometimes 5) and the strings are tuned to resonate in harmony with key notes of the raag (melody) being played and the strings are plucked open i.e. the player doesn't create extra notes. It's a common background instrument (not to sound too insulting to tanpura artists) played during other classical instrument performances.
