as in the title. My old IBM thinkpad T60 died on me today.

ive tried spare ram, removed the drive, checked the PSU is putting out power which it is.. still nothing!! no lights, no noise just dead!!

so Im looking for something to replace this, ideally needs to be cheap and cheerful running windows 7 nothing newer and will take the odd knock and bang as will get used for car diagnostics

get another t60 off the online auction place

about as cheap as youre going to get for laptops that come with win 7 on and you then have a load of spare parts too...

14 inch HP Elitebooks 8470p with 6gb ram, 500gb 7200rpm HDD, Windows 7 and a core i5 3360m are going for under £200, Awesome value for money...

Great build quality and can take a huge pounding and they still hold up great.

yea i bought a 8470p recently and its great great value

but also overkill just for car diagnostics so depends what other uses you have

Have you tried running the machine directly from the power (ie removed the battery and plugged the PSU in) as when the batteries are goosed they stop the laptops powering up, used to use Lenovos at work all the time and this was a major issue, also people who are recommending the HP Elitebook it is nowhere near as robust as the Lenovos, we used both and the HPs are a lot more flimsy

I have tried this still no joy. when I plug the psu in it gives me the power light but when I press the power button the light goes out.
I ordered another psu to try but same response.

I have been thinking along these lines. as you say I would have plenty of spares so could be an option.

thats the thing it would just be used for diagnostics and to be honest it wouldnt get used for anything else.

Ive played on the idea of using a windows touch screen tablet but would need one to run 7 as I tried to get my software to run on the 8.1 tablet ive got but it said no..

so Ive used the wife's laptop for a few weeks but just scored a free T61 from a mate as it wouldn't boot up and was giving an error msg ... the Bios settings were messed up. I changed the hard drive and a fresh install of windows 7 and its running nicely. so Im happy and the wife's happy as shes got her laptop back.
