Hey All,

Looking for some advice, hit a pot hole today which has torn the tyre wall on the front drivers side tyre. Just wanted to see if it would be ok to drive on until Friday when I can get it replace?

From a safety point of view no but just pottering around town then it should be ok but defiantly don't do any high speed driving on it i.e motorway or dual carriage way driving, but thats at your own risk as that would be deemed an MOT failure therefore it would be illegal to drive on the road. Do you not have a spare?

Should you drive on it? No, it increases the risk of a blowout.

Would I drive on it? Depends how urgently I needed to drive somewhere and how busy I was. You could call a mobile tyre fitter to come and see to it at work if you're very busy.

You can't see (from the photo anyway) the wire threads so i don't beleive it is an MOT failure. looks to me as if it's just a deep scuff. I had something similar - albeit smaller - a while ago and took it to my usual tyre fitter - he wouldn't change it, and it's still on the car. I'd keep an eye on it, if it starts to bulge it'll definately need changing.

Your right you can't see the chords think I jumped the gun saying it would be illegal as you do need to be able to see them for it to be a failure :o But I stand by don't do any fast driving as you could get a blowout and I would definitely get it changed.

is your tyre a run flat?

if so just drive on it till it blows or you need to replace it due to legal limits

if not don't go trying for any land speed records and exchange it asap :)

Honestly I think you might be over reacting a bit.

In an ideal would it wouldn't be there, but it isn't like it is a bulge or showing cords. In the grand scheme of thing it is a small scuff and nothing more.

Well just plodded along to work at casual speed, will give kwik fit a call to see what they can do today!!

Not to sure the idea with the mobile fitter, really great idea but zero appointments for 5 days on majority of the tires I would prefer.

Anyways, thanks for the help, dont seem to be any issues and should be sorted by tonight anyways...

I thought any damage in the tire wall was a huge no no? I was told a copper would do his best to make your life uncomforable if they found your car to have tirewall damage, or is that bull?

Not to worry... popped into Kwik Fit and had both front tires replace (the other was a amber warning when I had my service done in December). So good timing just to get both fronts changed!!

I had a piece of metal pierce into my rear tyre (motorbike) at an angle, rang up my trusty wheel fitter and he said as long as it's not losing pressure it's fine as it hasn't gone into the inner membrane that holds the air in, i may have dabbed at 150 on my private runway yesterday and it's absolutely fine, I think all these people telling you it might blow out and not to do high speeds are over-reacting a bit, it's a small scuff, if it balloons in anyway then get it changed ASAP, but it's fine now.
