Ripping and compressing dvd

Can any one suggest free software to rip and compress my dvd's so I can watch them on my media player (an archos) something user friendly would be best for me... ;-)

I would like to compress down to around 700Mb or there abouts, save to pc and then transfer to my media player. Any help advise would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

anydvdhd to rip them
autogk or handbrake to convert

As above AutoGK is great for conversion, I personally prefer DVD shrink for ripping though.

DVDfab (decrypter remains free after 30 day trial has expired)
Run the output through Handbrake using the AppleTV 2 preset

Job done!
