Hi there, i intend to put together a HTPC and i am looking to put my DVD's onto the machine but i have no clue how to rip them onto my hard drive.

What software should i use and what format should i be getting them converted to?

Many different routes to go.
I use Anydvd for my Blu-rays and DVDshrink for my DVD's. I personally rip my movies to a .iso disc image as I like to have the entire image of the disc. Then I use either Daemon tools or virtual clone drive to mount the image :)

Hmm thanks for the response but i haven't a clue what a .iso disc image is.

I was expecting it to be a mpeg-4/divx or something like that.

I'm guessing with DVD shrink i can remove all of the extra junk and just leave it with the movie & menu?

Yes you can get rid of a lot of the junk, fairly straight forward menu options within DVD shrink.
A .iso image is basically a mirror image of the disc, just stored on your computer. So you load that image via a clone drive and the computer 'thinks' you inserted a DVD and so goes onto to play this in which ever program you chose.

However, you can also rip DVD's to many different formats, just a preference thing really.

Well I have been having a little try out of this to see whats what.

Grabbed the first DVD that came to hand (Private Parts).

Used DVD Decrypter on it first and now handbrake is working in the back ground encoding it to MP4. I havent a clue if thats any good but it seems to be doing something!

I'll report back when it has completed.

Out of interest, how much faster would an i5 be at encoding this compared to my e6750?

Handbrake is quite good, hopefully that will be fine for you. An i5 wouldn't be a lot quicker because I am pretty sure handbrake doesn't make use of more than 1 core.

I have done all of my DVD's using handbrake. Have a play with the settings before doing them all.

I used H.264, quality is excellent. Filesize is large!
