Ripping Vinyl - Setup Help Needed

I've got a JVC amp/tuner/tape deck combined and a JVC AL-E500 turntable. The connections on the back of the combined unit are:

phono
video/aux
cd
vcr/dat play & rec
surround speakers

The turntable is plugged into the phono sockets and I also have an rca 2 socket to 3.5mm jack which I have got plugged into the video/aux and then into the line in on my x-fi extreme music card. However, there is no sould coming through my computer and the audacity software doesn't pick anything up. If I plug the rca connectors into the surround speaker sockets though I can record but the result is pretty poor. Have I got the right equipment to do this or am I plugging the cables in the wrong sockets?

Any help appreciated.

1) Put the turntable into the phono input on the amp.

2) Take the twin RCA from the VCR/DAT record to the line in on your soundcard.

Whatever the amp is "playing" through the speakers should now also be put out to your soundcard. If not try using swapping the 2 RCAs to the VCR/DAT play.

Should work - does on my stytem at home !

Tried this and it does not work, I wonder if the amp isn't working properly. Like I said before, I do get sound through my pc speakers (no speakers connected to the amp) if I connect to the surround sound sockets.

If I connected my turntable directly to the soundcard would this work or would the sound be poor?

Hmmm - all you are doing here is trying to persuade the amp to make your PC the 'tape deck' ie able to record and playback stuff.

Have you got a "tape monitor" button on the amp ?

Taking a signal from *** record player will probably result in v.poor sound as the levels will be wrong (record players put out a v.low signal and line levels are much higher) although you *may* be able to tell the soundcard to use "mic" levels and be OK.


TBH I don't understand why the first suggestion I made doesn't work - have you got outputs marked 'line out' anywhere ?

After much huffing and puffing I got the vcr/dat rec sockets to work with some different cables. However, the signal is really low when I'm using Audacity to record. Looks like the amp may be kaput, it is quite old and has been around a bit. I'm gonna see if I can pick up a cheap one on ebay and try that. Thanks for the help.
