riva tuner and 3870 fanspeed help

someone will pop alone later and put up a guide for you, what you want to be doing is creating a fan profile for you card since the 3870 has dodgey fan profile from factory according to a lot of the people who have one.

rivatuner has fan profiles section next to the overclocking tab i believe.

Also a way to disable driver signing in vista 64 for good, cos it needs to be disabled for riva tuner to run. Always prssing f8 befrore windows loads is a joke to disable it, there must be a easier way?

I think I actually use ati tool for overclocking and setting the fan profiles and find it works well. I'll have to check tomoz as on laptop at the mo.
I'm also sure there was no prob with vista 64 driver signing on it - there are also some good guides on the net on how to set up a fan profile too.

Thanks,, ati tool is working a treat, but its quite confusing cos when tI set the fan speed to 10% in the profile thing, the fan is actually running at 21%. Is that normal? Ive also found anything over 10% actual fan speed I can hear the fan, but even running at 10% its 41 -42c idel..Ive got a very strange card here, I think havent I? :D

from the guru 3d forums...

if you make a profile in catalyst after turning on Overdrive( make sure clock and memory settings are correct). You can then go to the file "C:\Users\Bretware\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\Bretw are. XML. the xml file will have the same name as the catalyst profile you saved. right click and hit edit.

<Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0">
<Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Manual" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="65" />

Change the value to "manual" and Want value to "65"

Save the file then reload your profile in catalyst.

65% seemed perfect for me, 70% was loud but you may need it if your case has poor air flow.

You will have to select the profile everytime you start the computer, but it will work until there is a fix or better info so i can figure how to change the auto target temp.
Good Luck ,bretware

When i did this in XP, i had to got to C:\Documents and Settings\Peter\Application Data\ATI\ACE\Pete.xml - note it is a hidden file.

Not sure if Ati tool is protecting it's memory addresses against punk buster nowadays? If you keep getting kicked from cod4 servers (etc) for unknown reason, or cod4 (etc) keeps crashing, then totally get rid of ati tool, and get rivatuner working :) It protects itself from PB, so it won't kick you from servers.

BTW, on the main screen of rivatuner, where your 3870 is listed, press the little down arrow tab, and select the pcb (gfx card) icon. Then from the menu's in there, you can select fan speed. Personally I just stick my 3870 at 60% the whole time (it can be a bit fiddly getting the right value, you may have to slide it up and down the bar, selecting different values till you get the one you want).

At 60% it sounds like a f15 with afterburners basiclly 50% is 100% but if I put it to 60% its louder even tho it still says its on 100%. Very odd hey?

Here are my settings in ati tool and temp is 43c atm, and its much, much quieter, thank god, Ive never used punk buster cos dont do much playing online.

I need a program that increases the fan speed the hotter it gets, cos I tried it at a static speed and it wasnt any good when I stressed out the card. Im hoping to get a 4850 in a few weeks anyway, so I will have to put up with the noise until then,

How quiet are the 4850s? like the fans dont run at a stupid speed while not gamming? Also what makes are the quietest? I was expecting my 3870 to be nice and quiet cos its sapphire, but its the noisiest card Ive ever had.

ok..well i have no problem with it (ati tool) remembering my fan speed settings on boot. you just tick on the settings to start up on boot.

If you want me to see what i did on the program I can let you know.

Ati tray profile can set it up to increase with increasing heat...I think with the 3870 the fan speed is at set increments.

Not sure the exact increments right now..but for example if you set 14% it could be 20%....32% would be 40%...those are just examples I'm not sure of the exact percentages right now.

Just tried ati tray, but the fan control dont work with the 3870 . with ati tool, I had got it to start up with widows but would have to re apply the fan controls cos it just kept loosing them..

I sooo wish I had steady hands so I could change the cooler on my 3870 card, I was even thinking of keeping this card a bit longer if I could get the fan noise down..

Its typical Ive spent £30 on my antec 900 changing all the 3 fans for nice quiet ones, but now I have this arse of a noisy card, and its much louader then my case,psu and cpu fans put together... If only it was winter cos the gpu fan turns off when it gets to 37c and back on at 43c, but even that gets anoying with it turning on and off every few mins. Its bliss when it turns off tho guys.

sure..it works on mine but with a different system and that..

Well I would change the cooler then if it's so noisy ..you can get them for a cheap price and they're very easy to fit. :)

Not as easy as a cpu cooler to fit tho I bet, Its need to be as simple as pos cos my mum are my hands so to speak and I tell her what todo, like shes useless with pcs.. plus I wont know what im doing either cos never messed about changing the gpu coolers, and its a arse to get other ppl todo things like that for me.

tbo i would say it's as easy as a cpu cooler...you unscrew 4 screws and then take off the cooler..remove and reapply paste and then put the new cooler on ..put the screws back on.

up to you though m8 :)

sod it I'll just get a 4850 in a few weeks time, but will need you guys help so I get the quitest one poss. Cos as you know the antec 900 case dont dampen the sound much at all and when I was using the ati tool I could just about hear the gpu fan when it was set at 20%, so that gives you a idea how quiet my psu,cpu and case fans are.

Just to update you guys "Cyber-Mav" guided me through how to change my fan settings by updating the bios, and Im very greatful of him, cos it took ages to figger out the best settings for my card. Heres the stock fan settings..
