I posted another message regarding onboard sound but my real problem was the gfx card was running the fan too fast. So as soon as it got a little hot the pc started to take on the noise of a jet engine.

I've had a play with rivatuner and read up on other users who have got an 8800GT card and looked at some auto control settings in the low level settings.

One of these

Duty cycle min 29
Duty Cycle max 100
T min - 60
T range - 32
T operating - 75
T low limit - 60
T high limit - 85

I tried out and I am seeing a far quieter machine as a result. No doubt the card will run hotter but at least my ears will be happy :)

However some queries, anyone know what temperature I should see tyically from my GPU under load. I've read they can hit 90C - at the moment i'm seeing under 75C (with the new settings).

Does the T high limit refer to when 100% kicks in on the fan?

That is a good read, unforuntately most people seem to bein the game for keeping the card as cool as possible so they can overclock more. I am happy with my current card - just want a quiet life when playing games.

I'll keep an eye on temperature and see where we go.

Not allowing for offsets, your card will sit at 29% fan until temps go above 60C. The fan will then increase in a linear fashion to 100% at 92C (seems a touch on the high side, but you may never get there anyway).

I currently have my GTX 260-216 (65nm) at D min 40 (almost inaudible), D max 90, T min 37, T range 26. It's a little loud during heavy gaming so I'm still tinkering to get the best balance between noise and temps. Like you say, it's a bit "suck it and see" trial and error until you get settings that you're happy with.

Louis, excellent thank you. If I wanted to change it so it increases between 60 - 80 or 60-85 (80/85 being the 100% fan speed) do you know what settings I need to achieve that?

what he said ^

Don't forget to monitor your actual temps v fan speeds. My T min is actually set around 8C lower than my target min temp (45C) as it seems to be reporting slightly differently, so my fan doesn't start to increase until actual temps exceeed 45C, rather than 37C.

Can you do that with the rivatuner - I can only see core temperature which I assume is the fans slightly lower temp?
