Just installed it, but its asking me whether i want to protect memory mapped i/o ports? do i need to? what does this mean?

edit: why is there a face on my post lol, didnt click anything :p

ok i just enabled it anyway.

Its pretty confusing though, all i want to do is a small (very small) overclock to my 8800gts, but im not sure how, it asks me whether to reboot or just scan, then 2d, 3d applications etc etc lol.

Anyone got a step by step guide?

Also, does GPU overclocking actually give a decent FPS boost? Is it as drastic as cpu overclocking?

The main reason for that iirc was due to a program called punk buster that "provides" anti-cheating measures for some online games... Latest version of PB does some things that make the system potentially unstable in conjunction with certain other programs, RivaTuner being one of them.

Unless you play games like quake 3/W:ET/ETQW, battlefield series, Farcry, etc. you don't need to allow protected memory mapping i/o.

Unless you can get a good 20+% OC imo its not worth it...

GPU overclocking is worth it if you are ever GPU-limited, for example if you like playing at very high resolutions with lots of AA/AF, or have a very powerful CPU.

and "worth it" is a relative term, for example say you overclock the memory/gpu by 15-20%, the actual yield in terms of increase in fps is likely to be ~ 5-10%

Now if your game is running @ 18fps its only going to run at 20fps oc'ed! (and thats being generous)

If your game is running at 18fps then an increase to 20fps is definitely worth it! When you are down that low every little helps.
