Anyone got a link to a comprehensive RivaTuner guide for beginners?

Been playing around with it but frankly it makes less sense than the average woman.

For example, changes to the clock speeds don't seem to stick for 2D/3D so I can't have different settings for each, how do I set this up correctly?

Another thing is the fan settings are all 100% for each mode, yet I can clearly hear the fan speeding up when I run a game so this info must be wrong.

What gives?
 
Now I'm really confused. The 2D/3D settings stick in RivaTuner and are confirmed in ATITool so all should be fine yet everything says I'm running at the 3D settings regardless of what I'm doing - i.e. just sitting at the windows desktop doesn't use the 2D settings. Howcome?

Someone please help, can't find anything about this online, most of the guides are totally useless and assume things like this will just work - well it ain't! :)
