RJ11 in a network switch?

I need clarification of my works network setup, i recently noticed that there is an RJ11 connector in one of the network switch pannels where normal RJ45 conennectors should go.

Is this a plausable configuration, or has someone done the wrong thing? The wiring behind the port is the same as all the other network ports.

This wire goes directly to the phone line, which i am more skeptical about.

It doesnt look like it should belong there, my manager seems to think its correct, but the pins just dont seem to look as if they touch each other with the port.

Can anyone justify this kind of setup?

Make and Model?
Doesn't sound right for a bog standard switch.

Ones a "NET6" model, no other information on the panel itself.

And the other is a Assynia (as5e) pannel.

Both have RJ11's connected to the phone lines, the NET6 is worrying me the most as i cant get the connector out.

I would have atleast thought there would be a rj11 to rj45 adapter?

You sure that's not just a patch panel? In which case it's fine putting in an rj11 if there's a voice device at the other end.

Sorry i read the OP as plugged into a switch. Yeah that's fine.

Yeah it is a patch pannel, so any patch pannel can accept a rj11 connector?

I never knew that.

/woops, i did say switch!

Yeah... say you have a fax machine or an analogue modem (for banking software etc) then you can patch that through to the phone line (usually in the comms room). It's standard practice.

Ah cool, it just looks so odd!

So phone line cabling is wired the same as a network cabling?

And the connectors and pins match up even though they are different sizes?
