RJ45 sockets

Hi,

Need a bit of advice please folks. Doing a bit of networking at home. Have ordered Cat 6 cable and some wall sockets. Unfortunately I've just noticed the wall sockets are Cat 5e.

Will the Cat6 cable physically fit into the sockets? If so, will the Cat5e sockets limit the speed capability of the Cat6 cable? Ultimately, do I need to/should I return the Cat5e sockets?

Cat5e sockets are fine with cat6 cable.

Depending on the length of the cable you would receive gigabit speeds.

Ideally if you can return for no extra cost then do so but if its going to cost I wouldn't bother

Thanks very much for that info, much appreciated. Will send back and get cat6 sockets for minimal extra cost.

It's important to have some perspective here - Cat5e is good enough for a gigabit connection. Putting Cat5e connectors on Cat6 cable is unlikely to certify as a Cat6 installation, and if you were paying a company to deliver you structured cabling to Cat6 standards then you'd insist on it being corrected, but if you are using Cat6 cable and correctly terminating the modules I doubt it's going to stop you from doing 10Gb at the distances involved in the average house.

Ok, appreciate the info. Will stick with the Cat5e sockets for now and see how I get on.
