hi, im moving into a new house soon, the house is pre wired for data and phone through standard data points and a central distribution hub, anybody know how a can make an rj45-rj11 lead so i can plug my phones into the data points? im not sure on how many pairs need to be used etc.

thanks, russ

You can get adaptors for just this purpose.

We use them at work, I have routed everything through our Cat 5e network and patch panels, phones, faxes, credit card machines the lot

He is correct.
I've done it many times in the past.

Indeed he is. At work our phones have RJ11 plugs and all the floor ports are RJ45. They fit in and work absolutely fine. I've also used an RJ45 coupler to join two RJ11 cables in the past which also worked absolutely fine.

every cabling contract I ever worked on had the telephones terminated to cat5e keystones. rj11 connectors fit in just fine

wtf!

i was about to post the same as Vent..
[edit](but rj12 is the 6 pin) rj11 is 4

/runs off to check

we used to use the dongle things all the time in work.. -come to think of it, you can send two phone lines down one rj45 yes? i'm sure we had splitters after the dongle, then the phones had different numbers

-can't believe they fit

they don't
people are just talking about using RJ45 ends with RJ11/12 wiring
RJ11 is the american phone lead (like you get in the back of modems) iirc

so do the rj11 plugs (as come with most modems) plugin to rj45 plugs and work fine as a general rule of thumb? if so im tempted to get rid of the bt style phone cables and replace the cables with rj11 modem cables. ive checked all the phones in the house and they basically have a cable with one end having a bt style plug and the end which clips into the phone is an rj11 plug already.

You're right in saying that RJ11 plugs are the american phone plugs and they're also ADSL plugs. You are however, very wrong in assuming that people are talking about using RJ45 ends on standard 2, 4 or 6 core wire meant for RJ11 plugs.

That is a (poor) picture of an RJ11 plug in an RJ45 coupler. Not only does it fit but it works absolutely fine if I plug another cable with RJ11 ends on it into it also. Try it yourself if you still don't believe us. Myself and a couple of other people have posted that we see this in action all the time - I see it every day at work. All our phones have RJ11 plugs and they are plugged into RJ45 sockets with no adapters.

I'm sure our new building at work/school has the phone connected in this way but i and the network manager never noticed just like the others have posted and were in the process of buying more adaptors. Must try this at work.

I can confirm 100% that RJ11 and RJ12 (4 & 6 pin) plugs fit into a standard RJ45 (8pin) socket. The latch used to release the plug hold the plug centrally in the RJ45 socket.

The only adaptors / converters you're likely to need are those to connect BT (431A and 631A) plugs into the RJ45 sockets.

I manage a Telecoms Tech Support desk, and I get asked about this sort of thing every day.

I too, can confirm this! I used it to my advantage loads of times at my old workplace!
