RMA a Q6600 - anyone done it ?

Methinks my Q6600 is dying ( PC doesnt even get as far as windows boot before dying )
Tried swapping everything out except the cpu so I think its the culprit.

Question: How long does it take on average for Intel to RMA a processor ?

It is generally considered CPU's work or they dont, and if it does boot up then it works.
Is everything getting enough voltage?
Could the harddrive be buggered?
Or PSU, meh really can you check stuff in another computer?

I have 2 almost identical systems ( using P35C_DS3R boards)

I have changed:
mobo
ram
psu
gfx card ( second card would not post kept doing the beepy thing - but vcard from this system ran fine in my other HTPC )
I have re-imaged the system from an acronis backup taken over 2 months ago - no diff.


I have just got a elchapo PCI gfx card to try out on this

Problem start like this:
Last friday night was doing some flying in IL2 , 5 mins into missions got some weird gfx corruption , alt tabbed killed game , rebooted PC tried again , again couple of mins in and it crapped out.

Things got worse over weekend and now it wont even boot into an acronis or any other util disk.

Iam gonna try removing my XFI card , my 8800GTX and my huappage Nova T and stick in a PCI gfx card and see how far I get.

Any ideas are welcome , cos I am stumped

If you'd been a bit closer I could have leant you a CPU to test. Tho you say that you've got 2 systems. Can't you use the CPU in the 2nd system to test the first system?

After I try the PCI gfx card + removing all other cards in system then
I will try swapping in the E6600 iam using right now , but iam dreading having to do it.

Iam using the orginal mobo right now on this htpc system I have.

Does your DS3R just loop? Like all fans come on and off non-stop until you turn it off at the PSU?

If so then it's your Mobo, i've had a DS3R & DS3 go out the exact same way.

ive seen cpus that will work in windows post etc, once under load they fail, due to overheating, reason I can only think of is poor contact between the cores and the heat spreader. RMA it if your in doubt.

Was it an OEM chip or Retail? I think Intel will only take Retail chips back, you need to rma it to your reseller preferably. (If it is indeed faulty)

Used to live in Bangor some years ago....off Robinson Road, off the ring road...

Anyway, some time ago I had a P4 3.4GHz (Northwood) on an Asus P4P800 E Deluxe, and after just over 1 year the system failed to post, I thought I had traced the fault to the CPU, so I rang up the retailer to RMA it, however, they didn't want to know as it was over the 12 month period, so I rang up Intel, and to start the RMA process going I had to send them a copy of the original receipt, to prove it was a Retail purchase. I eventually got the CPU, however when fitted the system still would not post, in the end it turned out to be the motherboard that was faulty, once I replaced it, the system worked fine....the point I took out of this issue, was that the CPU is more robust than what I had previously thought, and other components will fail before it does..

if your bios allows it you could try and disable a core or two and see what happens
