I'm thinking of purchasing my second ATi 5870 but I'm not sure which company to go with. I was thinking Gigabyte because I heard they have a UK based RMA service.

Has anyone had any experiences/heard stories RMA'ing with these companies?

Asus
Gigabyte
HIS
MSI
PowerColor
Sapphire
VTX
XFX

Whats your thoughts?

i had an HIS card die within 1 year OCUK sent me a replacement within two days of me sending them mine.

I know people who have RMAd XFX and Saphire and in the XFX case the RMA took a long time but an upgraded card was sent (8800 Ultra Failed GTX 280 was sent as replacement) And someone with a Saphire 4870X2 had to send it back to saphire and they turned it arround within 10 days.

For this reason i bought the Saphire 5870 a few weeks ago.

Have no personal experience but have read enough to know that Evga and Bfg(Wales)are arguably amongst the best. Keep hoping Evga will go Ati soon.

i did a stepup with EVGA on my 680i board (to 780i) and it took 5 months for me to get the board !

ouch! you see, things like this even it doesn't happen often, puts me off the company because I know i'm usually the unlucky one.

Where is Sapphires RMA dept located?

They are based in Hungary.

They also do not require any proof of purchase if the product is under 2 years old. As my friend who RMAd his 4870x2 had bought it from a popular auction site only to find out it was faulty and then the seller fell of the edge of the internet lol.

Which is good news for people buying second hand cards

Lol, thats good to hear. How long did it take? I guess it would b expensive to ship a card that size to Hungary!

Wasn't there recently a large number of people who were getting 8800's and the like RMA'd and upgraded as far as 275's etc? Was that with BFG

Can't be bad.

All I can offer is that I had a Powercolor 5870 and when it went back for being faulty I was advised to get the Sapphire one which I have had no problems with so far!!

Anyone else had experience with Sapphire/Gigabyte?
Don't know about gigabyte, but with sapphire you don't rma the card to them, RMA/Warranty as follows

'Sapphire VGA products carry a 2 year warranty with all enquires carried out through your initial place of purchase. This can only be carried out by the original purchaser Please contact your Dealer/Reseller for Warranty / RMA service. They will require proof of purchase which includes the original invoice/documentation.'

Here is my two pence on this one:

Asus have absolutely woeful customer service here in the UK. I have dealt with them on a number of occasions and have never had a satisfactory outcome. Granted each time was with products other than graphics cards, but for this reason alone I would be careful when buying their products. From experience build quality is not something they are too hot on either.

MSI have a fantastic customer service, they are based in Holland but get things done nice and quick. They have helped me out and sent me free and replacement parts on many occasions, I will be calling on them again very soon as I have managed to drop my laptop yet again.

I know this is slightly off topic but I can also vouch for the build quality of Gigabytes products, I have had my 38 series Gigabyte “ultra durable” card for what seems like forever now and it’s never missed a beat. I also have a geforce 3ti500 which is still working hanging around somewhere. I added a Powercolor 3850 to my gigabyte card later down the line which has also been perfect but is roughly half the age of the 3870 so I can’t really draw any comparison.

As for the others I can't really comment but seen as all the products are based on ATI's reference design there won't be much in it. VTX seem to be a bit of a different story however, they are a company of TUL Corporation who also own Powercolor and are specifically in the market of reducing costs by using alternative components and custom board designs.

Personally I question why they are competing with themselves. Why not market these products as Powercolor which is an established brand? It could be that they were protecting the Powercolor brand from a possible nightmare or something as simple as just increasing their market presence. Weather all this has any impact on the longevity or build of their VTX branded cards I will leave to the experts to answer.

Isn't it after 1 year you have to contact Sapphire themselves? I know it says 2 years but I think I read in some cases the etailer forwarded the customer back to the manufacturer.

XFX will refuse to deal with the customer directly, you can ONLY send the card back through the place you bought it from.

This is not true.

Myself and my team mates all won 8800 Ultra graphics cards at a Multiplay I Series LAN event attend by XFX and a OCUK competitor. When my clan mates died he contacted them directly and they delt with it.

Haven't Asus sorted out their RMA service?

I am sure I read somewhere on this forum that they now have a 5 day turnaround when you RMA goods with them, whether this is correct or not is a different story though.

I have RMA'd a motherboard directly with Gigabyte in the past, and I only had to wait 5 days to get my board repaired and sent back to me, I don't know if it would be the same for graphics cards though.

Only dealt with asus and gigabyte and i concur on the lousy asus service hence why i buy gigabyte when i can. Bought the sapphire version gfx card as no gigabyte were in stock. Asus offer a nice three year warranty but i would prefer a lower time and better service being honest but as i am unlikely to ever buy an asus product again not a problem for me.

i just RMAd my Sapphire 5870 which burnt out due to mobo going and had some internet browsing problems which resulted in artifacting/crashing and they have replaced it :D
