the classic - 'atikmdag Driver stopped responding message'

Can't play any games for longer than a few seconds if cpu/ram is overclocked. maybe a minute if i take my clocks down. it doesnt happen on the desktop at all, even with aero enabled.

my old card worked fine (9800GTX). PSU is a 600w OCZ StealthXtream, never had any problems with the psu.

I've tried both XP32 and Vista64. XP has the same problem, although the error message doesnt come up i get a ccc recover message.

So RMA time, or is there something i should try first? I'm not 100% manual fan control is working, i set it in CCC but it doesnt seem to do anything at all.

Thanks,

Dan

The only problem i can think of, is the stealth x stream is 25A on the 12V rail, and it's reccommended to have 30A on the 12V rail.

Other than that just try uninstalling/reinstalling drivers...

Not sure if that extra 5A makes a huge difference, perhaps it does.

Check your VCORE, I was able to reproduce this problem (on 4850 CF and a X2) with too low a VCORE.

Thanks i'll give it a go when i go home, although i'm using a core2 8200 rather than an x2.

Thats wierd, i wouldnt of thought the cpu would be anything to do with it, but when taking the cpu clock down the problem certainly doesnt happen as quickly so maybe it does.

Any recommendations on what my vcore should be for a 8200? i had it at 3.2ghz on with my 9800gtx.

Sorry, I meant a 4870X2 :) I have a Q6600 on the main blimp. I know it is somewhat bizarre, but it fixed the problem for me, and to test the theory on a clean install I done it with the X2 (lower the VCORE down several nothces) and bang it was back.

Just tried upping the vcore to 1.25v (it was on 1.15) no luck. should i try harder or is it finally time to admit defeat?

I m glad I got a 1100watt than :P

try enabled Vdrop? that could work, my vcore was droping blew the cpus 1.235 so I enabled that and it won't move now, so I can drop the voltage right off if I wanted

I dont understand though, i came on this very forum to ask if my psu was powerful enough and i was met with a resounding yes.

i'm a bit ****ed off if it is the psu tbh i'd rather the graphics card was faulty.

i'll try vdrop but i dont think my mobo has an option for it.

Yeah i've tried taking them down all the way back to stock and it helps, but there it still does it after a couple minutes.

Its a crash to desktop not a full blown unstable bsod/black screen crash so i don't think i'm running out of power.

I've got 1hdd. e8200 4gigs of ram and a good 600w psu. I'm not stressing it too much am i?

The fan on the card never seems to want to spin up so i'm wondering if its overheating...

I don't like OCZ for psu as my last one decade my Q6600 so it kept BSODing :( when it went bang

Could you not try the card in another machine, also try testing your memory with memtest, as i used to get thrown back to the desktop when i got my extra 2gb, tried running memtest, but it just wouldn't even start due to a prob, had to drop the timings back to default, and then it was fine after that, was weird though, as the extra 2gb i got is the exact same stuff that ive already got in there, and that ran at the other timings fine.

cant try another machine at the moment, but i've just bought this card, i.e the problems been happening since i bought it, so i don't think its the memory. (my old 9800gtx worked fine)

This is a real pain in the arse, in the couple of minutes gameplay i can get now and again crysis sure does look lovely maxed and running smooth. Makes it all the more frustrating!

I'll try a couple more things otherwise 9800 is going back in and i'll RMA it.

Everything seems to be pointing to a faulty card, i mean i hadnt had any problems since putting it in, have tried two clean OS's...

Sounds like it could be a power issue (either the card itself or PSU, a 4890 can peak 40-50watts higher than the 9800gtx?)

If you can't try it in another machine/swap PSU then just RMA (or you could post it to me and I'll test it ;))

Have you tried monitoring the GPU under load with ATitool or Rivatuner?

for me I was also getting the driver crashing when I didn't have quite enough voltage going through the cpu. New computer and wasn't sure how much voltage it needed at certain overclocks. Though it seemed stable in anything else, no single component stress testing will show the stability of the system while under essentially full load, gaming loads everything and will often topple a seemingly stable system.

Remember though for me, if the gfx card crashes completely then the system normally bsod's, if the driver fails, with Ati cards I tend to find the system recovers. I fix the stability of the cpu and suddenly its completely stable in games.

THere are other things though, a multicore patch you can still get for vista that ISN'T the one thats in the service pack(well sp1 had one patch, theres another, not sure if that is finally in SP2 or not). That also fixed a couple games for me, City of Heroes and something else I can't remember.

To date the driver has stopped responding thing, for me, has never once been a faulty graphics card, or a bad driver, but instability elsewhere in the system.

Well if i RMA it and its ok then i'll know its the psu, i don't want to get another psu until i can be sure thats the problem. I've tried upping the voltage to going on 1.3 volts at stock clock speed, it seems to make it worse. I can try to up it some more.

I just wished i asked whether my psu would be powerful enough one more time since everyone said it would be. Its got 3 12v rails @ 18amps each, which i assumed was good? i don't really know psu's.

Put my old card back in and now its happening to that too. How is this possible, could upgrading the graphics card of borked the ram or something?

The old card still works on dx9 but now doesnt like dx10. Whereas before i put the 4890 in it was fine in both.

If its now happening on your old card, it could be that the 4890's tipped your PSU over the edge.

I was considering that PSU for my 4870, but i got put off by the low amps on the 12v rails, had a feeling it wouldn't be enough, so i went for a Corsair vx550w instead.
