Just completed my new build. Spec is:

Q6600
Abit IP35Pro
4GB OCZ (2x2Gb PC2800)
HIS Turbo X 3850 512
Vista 64 HP
Hiper 580w PSU (from old build)

The main problem is that I keep getting this error:

Display driver atikmdag stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

Over and over. Its happening mainly on game menus (UT3 and COD 4 particularly) If it gets in the game it seems fine but can randomly crash. I have seen green texture and square artifacting in those menus too.

On the latest driver. All at stock so it aint an overclock issue!

Temps and voltages seem fine too.

Is it a DOA?

Thanks

Have you tried uninstalling the driver, using driver cleaner and installing a fresh driver, and also trying different driver releases?

It looks like a display driver issue to me.

Might be worth just reinstalling the OS. Remember to make a ghost image of your hard drive since its a new build. Restoring the image is so much easier and quicker compared to reinstalling the OS and drivers in the future.

I've tried reinstalling the driver. No-way am I doing an OS rebuild. Spent 2 days getting it into shape already.

I have my old gfx card (7800GT). Gonna try that in the machine after driver cleaning and try again.

It's dumping me out of games like nobody's business.........

Just out of interest, do you have xfire running?

I know there are issues with COD4 and xfire running together.

Also what driver are you using?

No Xfire. 7.12 latest.

Tried lowering the default clocks on the card and it lasts longer, but then dumps me out of the game all the same. UT3 is the worse for menu artefacts though.

Have you done clean installs of drivers though, you need to use drivercleaner each time. Tried game patches?

After this I would consider a RMA, how many games have you tested the card with?

I've done clean installs of the driver both times. Tested with COd4, UT3 and TF2. I get booted out and have to hard reset each time. Its a little random, I might last 5 mins or 15 mins in game but no longer than that for sure.....

Tried BIOS update? I think this card needs to be RMA'd by the sounds of it. Have you got another machine you can test it in by any chance?

Other than going to a beta bios on the Abit board I'm already at the latest.

I could try the original drivers off the CD I guess, but normally I ignore those and download the latest official ATI ones from the site which are inevitably newer!

Don't have another machine. But I'll test my old 7800GT first. That'll tell me whether its something OTHER than the card!

Maybe a silly question but what happens if you turn off the driver recovery? The power connector is firmly connected too ja? Tho it does sound like an iffy card if you are getting artefacts.

test temps my ati hd 3850 runs at 90 celcius at normal settings had to sett up some fan profiles in RIVA_TUNER to keep temps and graphical issues down while playing COD 4

try locking the gpu clock at stock 3d speeds in rivatuner.
i had some issues with the auto clocking feature causing flickering/resync at low gpu loads.
