Mums old iMac just died. She like me, was offered a 2012 iMac through apple care as replacement.

I was just wondering since the problems with the LG Panels currently, I have suggested maybe ask for a RMBP replacement instead to <= Value of the equivalent iMac, they do let you do this.

She doesn't need the power of the iMac for graphics so the 650m 1Gb will be fine. The CPU is only 10% faster in the iMac and she doesn't need the increased storage options in the imac.

So the question is what should she go for?

1. The iMac has better graphics/cpu/more storage capacity but she doesn't need that.
2. The RMBP has portability.

So what would you advise she choose?

I don't want to state the obvious but it comes entirely down to what she needs, and only she can tell you that.

Which model of rMBP are we talking about here? I'm presuming the top-end 13"? What will she be doing with the machine?

If the technical specifications are not an issue then I assume the decision comes down to portability v larger screen. Get the rMBP if she wants portability or the iMac if a larger screen is more important.

She decided to go for top end RMBP, she had to pay £492 for upgrade to maxed out 15 inch model.

She now has to get a refund on her remaining Applecare for the iMac and then re-buy Applecare again.

Sounds like a great option, as you could pick up an external monitor, mouse and keyboard if you ever needed a "desktop" setup.

I have a rMBP 15" base, to accompany my 21" iMac - awesome machine.

Mine has an LG display, no issues with normal usage. Not tried to 'force' any image retention either, nor have I seen any evidence of any.
