RMVB converter?

Recently acquired a lot of RMVB files. I really don't want to use real player to watch these and am looking for a way to convert them. I've tried googling but the only free converter I found told me that they weren't video files

So has anyone got any recommendation for what to use to convert RMVB to mpeg/avi/wmv etc? Must be free really.
