Hi All,

I have added my new road bike onto my home insurance in case it is stolen, I them thought in this day and age do I also need liability insurance?

What do you guys have?

Yeah, you can get a pretty massively high amount of public liability insurance through British cycling. Like hundreds of thousands for £30 a year or something.

If you're cycling on the road, then please be considerate to other road users and get liability insurance.

For all the cyclists that get knocked off by cars, at least be the decent one who is in a position to right their damage too, as even cyclists make mistakes.

Have you double-checked that your bike is definitely covered? A lot of contents insurance either doesn't cover bikes above a certain value or have annoying conditions that make the insurance nearly worthless (for bikes).

To add to this, i have heard of situations where if you do have to make a claim you'll end up paying far more for your home insurance next year, even though it may be cheaper to add it onto your policy than to get separate cycling insurance.

My missus works in insurance, theoretically your home insurance policy premium is calculated on your post code and the insurers work from that... Even for car insurance (but many other variables). It would depend on the individual underwriter if they calculated the additional premium for adding a bicycle to your home insurance against their records of claims for bicycles in the area. Obviously most underwriters wouldn't calculate to this micro amount but would probably calculate all the policies as a whole, certainly for more rural areas. So a bike theft in the area would just be a claim (so everyone in the area would see their premium slightly affected regardless if they had a bicycle covered or not). In much higher concentrations of cyclists (London etc) they probably DO calculate to such a micro level - more cyclists in given areas, more claims etc.

Obviously specific bicycle cover would be more comprehensive cover along with other bonuses you otherwise wouldn't get. You may find that your home insurance bike cover wouldn't cover you when competing/racing/triathlon-ing etc!
