Time to start compiling an invoice for her then.

Waaaaaaaaaaaay ahead of you.

Brifters - £250-£400
Pedals - £90
Saddle - £80
Carbon bottle cage - £20

Might need to replace the cables when the brifters are replaced and that's another £80 since I used Gore Professional sealed cables.

Then there is the actual bill to do the work.

Well I took the plunge and put the deposit down yesterday so I can collect it after work today. Went for the 54cm Allez in the end. Paying £499.99 for it which seems to be about the rate for it locally (I don't want to order online for my first road bike), I'm also getting 25% off anything I buy from the shop in the next 2-3 weeks so pedals+shoes.

What other accessories could you guys recommend? I've got lights already but not much else :)

Decent helmet + some padded bib shorts
If you've not already got them; a frame mounted pump, tyre levers, spare inner tube and a multi-tool. Getting a puncture miles away from anywhere and not having the means to fix it is a pain, and most other minor issues can be dealt with using a multi-tool. Perhaps a bottle cage and bottle, again if you don't already have them.

Fortunately got most of those from back in my MTB days. Good point on the spare inner tube though.

Buy more than one; otherwise when you get a puncture you'll swap them over and it might be a few days before you get round to repairing the punctured one or replacing it. I guarantee that during that time you'll get another visit. The puncture fairy strikes when you are most vulnerable.

I picked up another puncture last night, as I was turning right into a junction and a Waitrose delivery van decided he wanted to come out of the junction. I was all over the shop.

I think it's about time you got a helmet cam.
Or at least stopped wearing the jersey with the target on the back :p

Looking for a spare pair of black and yellow bibs for the winter.

Thinking about getting the above. I know they're not going to be great but I don't really want to spend a lot (obviously) and I'm sure they'll do the job for at least 1 season. Has anyone else bought these or similar perchance?

I have a pair of Tenn-Outdoor bibs, they seem fine. I have worn them for 3-4 hours at a time without any chaffing, no irritating seams or that sort of thing. Like you I doubt the padding is going to last for long, but it's sufficiently comfortable for me. With that in mind, I think they're excellent value for money.

The price for bibs seem ridiculous compared to a standard pair of padded shorts, seeing as it is only a bit of extra fabric.

I'd like some bib shorts but I've not bought any yet due to the price. How do the ones from ebay, such as the ones mentioned in the quotes, compare to the likes of a DHB branded one (which appear to be cheapest?). I'm not after anything amazing, just a decent pair of padded bib shorts that aren't going to fall apart, from any shop.

I have a pair of dhb Aeron bib shorts (their cheapest ones), as well as a pair of the ones in the eBay link. In terms of quality, the dhb ones certainly *feel* better made, as though they'll last longer. However, that said, I doubt very much that I could actually tell the difference between them in a blind experiment; by that I mean that they don't any different while wearing them. I've not yet had the opportunity to try any of the more expensive "premium" brands (i.e. Rapha/Assos) so I can't comment on how they compare.

I've got 2 pairs of endura bibs, 2 pairs of castelli, a pair of shutt vr, a pair of nailini club bibs and last week m and m direct were doing adidas sky bibs for £20 a pair so I bought 2.

The enduras are very tight on the shoulders. I have a short body do these are made for dwarves with massive thighs. The castellis are insane; one is a small and one is a medium and they are both too small and rub between the crotch and thigh. If I'm a large then god knows what Italians a built like.

The shutt vrs are easily the best although there was a time when I didn't get on with them. I think that sometimes some ratio of height, waist, bum and thigh size means they are just wrong and it doesn't work.

The new sky ones are good. Only worn them four times but they seen great.

Get a pair of bibs.
You dont need to spend massive amounts to get a decent pair (i had some raceface ones which are the best i'v had and cost £40 - but raceface dont seem to make lycra shorts anymore :( ) Spend 40-50 quid and get a decent pair. Giordana is a good bet - quality and can usually be found for a decent price.

Get a pair of these: http://www.decathlon.co.uk/EN/bib-shorts-5-graph-blue-race-172056479/

You won't get a better pair of shorts for <£40.

Hmmm, works for me. Search their site for BIB SHORTS 5 GRAPH BLUE RACE.

Large is probably right, sizing for bib shorts is about height as much as anything. I'm 5'10" and medium is good for me but any taller and they'd be too small.

With cycling clothing common sense pricing goes out of the window.
Pricing is based on what people will pay, rather than how much it costs to make.

Could anyone recommend me some lights? There are so many mixed reviews I was wondering if anyone had any personal experience.

My budget is about £30-35. Ideally I would like some that can be used on unlit roads...

Thanks.
