Road Cycling Essentials

Read up on things and if its your first time on a road bike i'd spend a few weeks on short circuits so when things do go wrong you arnt far from home.

Also winter coming up - none wants to change tyres in -10 temperatures.

If anyone's interested, I just got some of the arm & leg warmers from Aldi yesterday, and I wore the arm warmers for the first part of an early ride this morning. Comfy and toasty warm, fuzzy roubaix-type material inside is nice. £14 for both is good :)

Don't want/need any of the other stuff so dunno if it's any good.

I got the windproof jacket and thermal base layer. They'll do the job well enough given their cost. :)

Need some new tyres I think.

Currently got some Continental Ultra Sports on the Boardman at the moment but they're looking a bit worn out.

I have been getting a lot of punctures so a stronger, more puncture resistant tyre is the plan.

Continental GP4 and Michelin Pro3 seem to be getting good reviews. Are there any others I should consider?

Just to add another to your list, I'm very happy with my Michelin Krylion Carbon tyres. I've ridden over all sorts of rubbish and they're still in great shape.

Cheers, they might be the ones actually - seem to be particularly well regarded on wiggle for puncture resistance. Are they decent in the wet? Conscious that winter is just around the corner despite the 30 degree sun outside today.

I'm also running the Krylions and they seem fine in the wet so far. I have had one fairly catastrophic puncture where the beading of the tyre came away but no 'normal' punctures :p

I like my Krylions too. Had a few penetrating bits of glass/sharp stones, but no more than expected for London roads. Decathlon had some on half price when I was there so I bought two more pairs for when I next wear them out (my 4 and 5th set now).

I seem to get a puncture every other ride at the moment. I am pretty sure I am not currently getting quite enough air into the tyres at the moment which isn't helping but I think having what look like budget tyres on there at the moment doesn't help.

Got a Decathlon just across the river from me so might pop in there tomorrow and see if they have any at a sensible price.

I liked Krylions as well. I only swapped to Durano S because there was a time when production shortages meant you couldn't get hold of Krylions. Happy with Durano S as well and have just got a set of 25mm Duranos (not the racier S model) to put on the winter bike when I build it up.

I find CRC are usually the cheapest for the Krylions. I have seen them at Probikekit a bit cheaper but that was a while ago and the offer wasn't on for very long.

+1

CRC also sent me a new tyre no questions asked when mine played up. Didn't need to return the tyre - customer service is fantastic.

I had a bit of a mixed bag yesterday in my little world of cycling. I went out for my first mountain bike ride as an adult, with a couple of guys from work, over to Reigate Hill. Unfortunately the ride ended prematurely after I took a tumble; I underestimated the steepness of a slope and ended up coming off the bike. Apparently I landed on my back, with the bike coming down on top of me. No broken bones or any other major damage, just some nasty scrapes on my arms, legs and face. As for the bike (which I was borrowing from one of the guys), the handlebar is trashed but apparently everything else is okay, and my helmet is ruined. I think I'll stick to riding on the road for the time being.

On the plus side, after many months of procrastination, I finally got my Van Nicholas Yukon;

It has an Ultegra triple groupset, Mavic Ksyrium elite wheels, Van Nicholas carbon fork, the rest is all standard VN gear (brakes, saddle, stem, seatpost etc), and SKS chromoplastic mudguards. Haven't ordered the pedals yet, but probably going to go for Shimano A530s as I'd like to be able to ride with normal shoes as well as SPDs as the mood takes me. It's frustrating the hell out of me that I can't ride it, but at least I finally have it :)

Scubascorpion, your stats don't add up. 2hrs35 at 21.6kph isn't 61km. Odd.

Anyone using GPS use Strava.com? It let's you compare and compete with others over sections of your route and has KoM awards.

I was led on the bed recovering whilst posting on the mobile, I think the mobile to PC conversion is borked.
