I got out and did a quick 14 miles this evening. Picked up a few achievements on strava, including managing to average 20.2 mph on a 2.8 mile segment which I'm pleased with. The numbers are definitely going in the right direction!

Nice one. I did a similar route on Sun but ended up taking a wrong turn and ended up doubling back on myself then heading down the A580 to the Greyhound.

I'm definitely feeling not having a day off all last week. I'm having to take it easy a bit on my commutes home. Should be ok after this weekend though. I've got too much on to do any serious riding.

Had the guy in showing off the winter range of Castelli clothing today. I wish I could afford to buy a few bits for myself.

Not 100% sold on the integrated jersey/bottoms idea but the the Mortirolo would do me fine for up here :)

Do thicker tyres really make that much of a difference? Genuine question. I've got 32mm tyres on my bike (potholes everywhere...) but now I'm wondering how much quicker I'd be on something like a 25mm.
Thinner tyres aren't always faster, they are more aerodynamic tho.

I went from 47mm wide tyres to 65mm wide tyres and the ride is more comfortable.

I do run them at lower pressure though, which seems to soak up the bumps better. :)

If you commute i wouldnt bother, not going to make any difference and itll just make for a less comfortable and more puncture prone ride

Fair enough. I suppose if speed was really an issue I could always drop two stone and get start getting a bit more aero.

My GF laughs at me because I look like I'm saying "**** you wind" and just trying to beat it out of the way when I ride.

Damnit!

I'm scared of splitting the plastic and rendering it useless. Any tips?

If it's the same sort of plastic as the RoadRacer mudguards it'll be fine. I hacksawed a bit off the bottom of the rear one to make it fit my girlfriend's bike and it didn't even think of splitting.

So I entered a competition to win a £2000 Trek road bike last month. Yesterday I had the day off and my colleague took a call for me that said I had won "a competition" but refused to leave any details or try and contact me by mobile.

Today I see on the website the winner for said bike competition has been announced. Crazy coincidence or did I win but since I was unavailable they drew out another name?! :(

what ? u sure the call was for the compeition ? if so that sucks balls, u should call em back and give them greif ! lol

It's just what my colleague text me. I haven't entered any other competitions, but it seems odd they wouldn't use my mobile number which I'm sure I filled out so it may have just been spam. Either way it's not worth thinking about! A free Trek Domane would have been nice though.:p

I entered a competition to win a Ribble bike... I'll be sure not to dismiss any phone calls too quickly!

I need some advice for riding uphill and one particular hill which to most of you is nothing but knackers me every day.
Some riders get off and walk up (MTB's), I've actually overtaken a couple of riders (MTB's) but one bloke half my age on a road bike and dressed in lycra has come past me a couple of times.
I can accept that and mentally live with it because he's got a good looking bike and obviously trains harder.
This morning just as I was hitting the brow an MTB came past me which really pee'd me off but if I knew it was behind me I would have put a lot more effort in.
Anyway, as soon as I was on the flat he didn't stand a chance, I put it into top gear and flew past him but its upset me all day (yeah, I'm a mardy bum).

Now the technical bit - https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=e...EUj_vyOX7KrOmnzb9Rtkw&cbp=12,336.06,,0,-11.67

This is the start of the hill and I usually hit it on 6th gear (1st=granny).
By the time I get to the first street on the left I may now be in 5th but I'll maintain it until the first street on the right and then I'll slowly move down to granny even though I'm starting to level out :(
I do try and stand up but I find this hard to do and can't maintain standing for long.
As soon as I get on the flat I'm in 17th gear and hit over 20 mph for the rest of my journey.
So I need some tips:
Am I in the wrong gear?
Should I be in granny straight away?
If I was running I would have 15 second bursts so would 15 seconds standing up and then sitting down for 15 secs help and then slowly increasing my standing? (well obviously this would help but what would you do?).

Any advice appreciated because I can't let an MTB ever come past me again even it was for only seconds.
