Road Cycling

There's a little Strava segment I've had my eye on after it popped up as 3rd overall once. About 4 miles long and quite a few traffic lights along the way. Record is 22mph I think. I've been pushing 26-30mph with light traffic along most of it before but the slow down for the odd light completely ruins any chance :D

couple of those near me where they've clearly been done at 3am with the rider just belting past the lights.

To be fair I just checked it and I'm only 0.3mph off the KOM. 10 seconds. I probably could have bagged that if I had pushed a little bit harder that time but I didn't know of it's existence :p

A mate back home was mentioning his 1.5 mile KOM including a slight hill that he bagged in the storm in February at about 10PM. It was a little windy Christmas day so I increased the KOM to 29mph avg from 25mph. Still held up by one car! :D

Yes cycling through the city you're never going to run up a decent average, too many interruptions and even if the clock pauses when you stop - there's still the slow down to the lights and the getting going after the lights.

This is my commute in - there's lots of starting/stopping and there's also a fair bit of elevation:

The run home though is an absolute piece of cake!

that looks like a decent commute! mine is a PITA and is really putting me off cycling/commuting lately! oh how I wish I could WFH more often

https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/856542774 is the one where I managed somehow to dip over 19mph avg

33 miles yesterday. Was wet and miserable outside but somehow I kept warm and dry.

Until I took my kit off and realised I was soaked through…and cold. First flat in a while too.

My disc bike makes some horrific squeals under braking, both font and rear. I’m using some FEW/Evans Organic pads. If I swap them out will they quieten down? Im pretty sure my callipers are aligned, however I will triple check if people say the pads aren’t the problem.

Business and commuting is exempt.

I'm in Faraday which I think is the same building just modernised, certainly our floor is.

I thought Faraday House was knocked down and is now a car park?

Welcome to the Birchwood commuting club! I'm in building 303 but nick the facilities in Chadwick House! We have showers in my building but that is it, no drying facilities. Plenty of bike sheds but I used the one next to Thompson House under the gaze of the CCTV cameras!

Does anyone have any advice to give on touring bikes? Ideally I would prefer a drop bar bike with hydro discs and able to mount panniers on the front and rear. It has to be able to go on some gravel paths as I am debating on riding the Eurovelo 5 and as far as I know it isn't fully complete. Budget not bothered about unless its insane.

Looked at Koga and Treks etc but dont like the bar end shifters of the Treks and Koga dont seem to spec drop bars, not that it would be too much of a problem to swap out it guess.

Ready to cycle in the rain?
Always. I'm not a fair weather cyclist! To be honest the amount of money i've spent on winter/all weather kit then i'd really be kicking myself if I didn't make use of it! Not to mention the ~£1800 Diverge! ;)

It's quite a good feeling to ride in challenging conditions anyway! Man & machine vs nature! :D
Off for some early season coaching/testing this morning.

Local coach offering a full hour session of testing/programs/coaching etc for £20 intro offer.

Watt bike testing/VO2 max/heart rate zones etc - Will report back later on but thought I needed something to kick start the year properly.
That's a great deal with all those tests! Local coach here offered me a club discount on his coaching - £35 a month with 2 group rides. He''s a good coach but most of his training is for already established guys looking to progress. Training programs & dietary advice are his main things for that charge, 1 to 1 coaching rides are £10+ a pop! :o
New HRM arrived so I tested it at lunch... Amusingly high HR given low power output... Totally feeling the effects of illness :/
Which did you go for?

Are you after real enduro or more audax kinda orientated? Heard amazing things about the Surley (sp?) Long Haul.

Think the battery has run out on my TickR. Not responding on Saturday. Pretty good going considering it did about 480 hours in 2016 and some the year before.

Be good to hear what the coach has you do and what data you get back.... for £20 I would definitely be taking that punt as you will only get back some very useful information to work and go forward with.

Where are you located and who is the coach if you don't mind me asking?

Good work & well done! Might sound slightly odd but if you're the stronger rider already (and will continue riding with your buddy) then stick him on the front more. Unless he''s riding more and progresses faster (fitness wise) you'll leave him behind loads as your fitness improves and you'll be continually reigning yourself in, which gets very annoying after a while! ;)

it's a strange one; he used to ride at a semi-pro level but hasn't done anywhere near as much cycling over the past 18 months or so. I'm literally just starting out :p He's got all the kit and i suppose the best way to put is he has the pedigree? As we were cooling down I asked him was he just waiting to see how far I'd go before i blew up on the front. He said he was although he did have to work hard in bits :p

Also, the main reason i was in front yesterday was because roads were wet, i'd forgot my sunglasses and therefore kept on swallowing the mud he was kicking up :p

By pedigree/having all the gear etc what you are saying is that he is experienced and happy to take a tow off the new guy who doesn't know any better. Flick your elbow and tell him to get his arse on the front next time you are out. When you are out with mates this should just be a given and not even considered and everyone should just take the odd spell and help each other out = Something he should be telling you and showing you if he's raced at a decent level and you are new to the sport.

ayrshire.

Just home - good session. The chap is just trying to boost his clients etc.

1 hour - covered:

Goals for the year
Bike setup
weight/height/fat etc
Then a general warm up on the WATT bike with all the data it produces.
6 second max effort power
3 min aerobic max effort (vo2 max)
pedaling efficiency etc

Totally pumped!!:D:D

He's sending me a report later with all the information on but he's getting me back next Monday to work on a training program/session again.

Good stuff - all very interesting stuff and hopefully give me some useful information to work on. Will stick the details of the report up later on for people to view if they want.

He also runs HIIT sessions at local school at night for anyone to attend (£4) etc.
