Road Cycling

I'm running a medium cage Shimano 105 RD which works perfectly - it's designed for a 32 cassette.

I've got a 28 on my Sunday best bike but when I build a new winter bike next year I'll put on a 32 and see what I make of it. I reckon I could be converted.

Got a used Cervelo branded Rotor set on FB with GXP BB for $135! With used aero SRAM rings. See when it turns up, bought and sold a few things on FB bike market group and had no problems but it's always a bit dodgy.

My Rapha Pro Team bibs stitching came loose, bought March last year. Emailed them at 6pm, Aus close at 5pm, but I had a reply in 5 minutes! Sent them a photo, repair agreed & post back tomorrow. Good service!

Got my new front wheel today for training on, always been using cheap wheels so this should be sweet!

White Industries T11 hub, Saipim spokes, hplusson achetype rim, weight with rim strip and no skewer 760g.

I drilled a 2mm hole in the rim on either side to drain water, found my other would fill up the box section after riding in the rain.

Looks great while the rim is all black, so so when the brake track wears to silver.

That's a very shiny wheel :)

My Gabba 2 should arrive today or tomorrow...so I can send it back and get the right size

Ahhh thanks, good info,
I had wrongly assumed the 'SCS' system listed for wheels also incorporated the 142mm thru-axle with their ratchet/spindle arm.
No idea what the specific name for it is!

Some horror stories about sourcing some aftermarket wheels due to the increased frame spacing...
Which was one thing I wanted (an on-road wheelset & an off-road one!).

Thankfully a set of the Roval CLX40 would be one of my choices anyway,
leaving the AXIS 4.0 Disc my Diverge came with (and their high spoke count) as the off-road wheels.

Specialized said they would include a different hanger with new bikes so you could fit aftermarket wheels.

Can't find any info on where to buy it separately though. :(

That's a very fancy wheel Berger!

It ended up being quite expensive!

Could have bought the rim cheaper off wiggle than the builder buys them trade for in Australia. Or had a set of Ultegra front and rear factory wheels for the same price.

Worth it for the local support though and paying for the knowledge and time spent. My powertap has been bomb proof and when it needs maintaining I can send it off to be done. Plus matching front and rear wheels now, same rims, spokes and both 24H.

Hub was $190, $150 for rim ($100 on wiggle!) then spokes, nipples, building cost and postage.

Roadie.

On my R5 it was the rear derailleur which grenaded. I replaced it with a Force 22, and the shifter with a Force 22 shifter too so I could go 11 speed. I changed the cassette and chain to Force 22 as well.

I kept the Rotor cranks though, with Praxis chain rings I got last year, everywhere I read said you don't need the 22 rings or cranks.

Can't use the shifter as I'll need TT shifters. Selling off some of my 10 speed gear cheap now. It's actually cheaper to buy 11 speed gear and with a 11-28 cassette I don't need several cassettes.

Aye, I'd be astounded if I could go sub 6.

You'd be shocked how quick you can go in a big group event like that. It was my OH's first 100 and she did 5hrs36 and still had a quick finish in her legs. Aside from a mental blip about 40 miles in and being held up in toilet queues it would have been comfortably under 5hrs30. You'd get under 6 easily. :)

That sounds pretty brutal. How many were actually involved in that crash then?! Yeah, the Surrey section was very twitchy. I was glad to get back onto the road back into London. A lot more space.

Whilst I don't pretend to have the best bike handling skills, I leave plenty space to make up for it.

Apparently they want to increase the number of riders next year...I don't think that's wise.

I think I saw 4 or so still on the deck, not sure if there were more than that. :(

Would I do it again? Probably not.

I don't pretend to be the best at riding in a group, but some people were just plain impatient/dangerous.
The guys who I know who've ridden it have always said similar, not quite sure why RideLondon always attracts the idiots, but equally quite glad the majority of the Sportives I've ridden didn't have (m)any. The ones which did it was fun to put the hurt on them - wheelsucking/overtaking on the flats and then climbing like old women. Drop them. Drop them hard! ;)

Glad you're all ok and glad you completed it in a pretty good (moving) time. Average is good so don't beat yourself up too much! Weather looked great?! (saw some of the TV coverage). You've got a good reason to do Leith and Box another time! :)
A few final stats from my personal challenge of 1000 miles in July.

1010 miles
45,000 feet of assent
53 hours ride time
32,000 calories
Great work, well done! Especially with that elevation!

Also did ride London, was far enough at the front that I only saw two crashes, one of which was because of a car on the course ffs. Thankfully at fairly slow speed, and the other on a climb which narrowed more than people were expecting.
Yeah it was good fun, drilling it leading the entire peloton through Knightsbridge I'll not forget, and that run in along embankment. Won the sprint of the second group in, so had to be pleased with that :o
Awesome riding mate, especially to squeeze it in under 4 hours! Being able to push like that through Knights & Embankment are worth the entry fees alone & not something you would otherwise get a chance at! :D
I don't know about the gradient, I just know it's chuffing steep when I drive up and down it.
You drive that back road or are you thinking of the normal Birdlip road past the Air Balloon? I've always wanted to cycle up there as it'd be a fantastic climb. Shame the road is just so damn busy with lorries! :(

Where do you live? I'm over in Hereford and starting to explore further and further!

EDIT: Totally Unrelated.

Had a fantastic weekend away in the Gower with the better half & dog. My quads are utterly ruined from an 8 mile 'stroll' that took us around 4.5 hours and involved sand dune climbing, rock pool dodging, clambering over some rocky headland and avoiding snakes. Saw one quite big grass snake which must've been over a meter long! Great weekend but really hampered any more riding on my new weapon. 36 miles riding for the week (lol). :(

Yup. Big groups of fast people make things a lot easier. Still pretty impressed by a sub four hour time though :)

I always come down the back road on the way home from work (Swindon direction). There is a cycle path up the main hill however the surface doesn't look too good from what I can see.

I live near Brockworth.

Does Ride London attract the super pro elite because these times that are being talked about are very impressive! I've only done one 100 mile sportive and we finished with a moving time of just under 6 1/2 hours and we easily passed others vs being passed at a rate of 10 to 1.

I must admit that even a very spread out sportive (helped by us starting 20 minutes late due to an exploding tyre in our group!) got my bum twitching as someone who only rides solo. Random swerving seemed to be the order of the day and I probably looked like a try hard idiot when I overtook some people out of the saddle giving it some beans but there were people who literally were all over the road and whom a call of "on your right" caused them to instantly weave right while looking over their left shoulder  I wanted to be alongside them for as little time as possible :p
