So this is a daily exit for me and drives me nuts.

My understanding is that the two lanes on the left are for the next exit (as per my amazing arrows) and the lane on the right for the one after (that subsequently branches into two lanes), but of course people use the middle lane to get round the traffic and then cut into the lane on the right (as per the red arrow) as it branches. It’s frustrating that the lights ahead of them are red, so of course they block the middle lane (and my exit) causing everyone to take a detour around them.

It’s not illegal, but I’d argue it isn’t great road etiquette, screws us over to the left and it’s obvious they are just trying to get ahead of the 3 lane traffic.

Am I completely wrong?

Wanna go for a beer? :D

There's a couple of places like that near me. 600m of signs and road markings that say "M57 only" but people still use that lane to muscle into other further on (Switch Island in Liverpool if anyone is familiar). I don't mind too much as I'm aware it can happen and anticipate accordingly, but it is mega frustrating when that lane then tails back into you in the correct lane and you can no longer continue...
