Essex, innit?
I posted another thread that my car is knackered and I want to replace it.

I've received the letter from DVLA stating that I need to renew my tax, but there seems no point if I'm going to bin the car (I won't get anything for it).

It's probably going to take me a couple/few weeks to find a decent car to buy.

What can I do?

I havent got the letter here (in fact I've not actually read it). How long do i have to renew the tax?

Maybe i just need to just hurry and get a new car in that period?

Just tax it for 6 months because you can claim back the months that you dont use.

Technicaly 12 months would be better, as 12 months is cheaper per month as they charge an admin fee included in the 6month disc.

Eg with my car the 12 month disc is £110 but 6 month is £60.50

If you used it for one month I think you would get a refund of £45.83 on a 6 month and £100.83 for 12 month.

Meaning a six month disc costs £14.67 for 1 month and a 12 month £9.17

Hardly a major saving :D

take the letter to the local PO and declare it SORN this afternoon, that fixes your urgent non payment of tax issue.

when you come to sell it you can either try to sell it woithout tax or just re-tax it (and insure it) when the time comes. There is nothing stopping you selling it without Tax but with a valid MOT.
