SX, unfortunately
I boo-boo'd it would seem at home. Some time back I followed some instructions to set up folder redirection and roaming profiles - but I'd been noticing that logon times have been far too long. I have a profile size of over 40GB and my wife's is over 20GB.

*NOW* I find that I should have set up the folder redirection first according to this:

Any tips about how to un-break my boo-boo? I guess I need to strip it all back and start again?

Thanks :)

Do you really need roaming profiles and folder redirection? Depending on where the huge amounts of files are kept you can exclude certain folders by group policy such as downloads etc.

You can just change your roaming profile to a none roaming one and then configure folder redirection. I suppose it depends how important being able to access the same files, folders and settings that are saved locally on another machine.

In a home environment I would just setup a user folder and save everything to that. Folder redirection doesn't redirect everything though.

What operating systems are you using? Server 2012 can have profiles contained inside a VHDX file that just attaches as and when needed.

I am beginning to think that I don't need roaming profiles, just the folder redirection. Mis-read when I set it up I guess.

Sorry, server OS is 2012 R2 and all client OS's are 8.1

We're often out and about so remote login etc. so need the redirection so we can use our laptops at home but work directly off the server when away.

From what I've seen the VHDX method only works for RDP on session based setups?

Hm, that was surprisingly easy to fix. My concern was that because everything was duplicated in the profile as well as the redirected folders, get rid of the profile and windows would clear the folders, but fortunately not.

Super speedy logons now :D

You are right with the VHDX files yes.

Sounds like you are using folder redirection with offline files enabled. At least its sorted.
