Morning troops.

Im hoping you guys can shed some light onto this. Usually i would just take the users roaming profile off through the AD although im quite intrigued how i would properly fix this if i had to. I.E if they had to stay on a roaming profile without their files re-appearing.

Whats happening is if said user cleans up his PC and deletes aload of files, even though the logoff / shutdown is sucessful his roaming profile is still bringing the files back. Any ideas?

Ta :)

Disable the profile in AD. Once done rename the profile on the local machine also. When the user logs back in again it will generate a new profile and you can copy any needed data back from the old one.

All AD is telling the local machine is how to create the profile. If you change these setting the machine isn't picking them up as the profile is not being created.

If you want to remove files from the profile you should be able to delete them from his local profile and log off the pc and that will update the roaming profile. However if that profile is on various computers or servers. Every computer will have to have the profile removed because the local profile always wins. So when you log in to a pc with a roaming profile that has not had the files removed when you log out it will just copy the files back down again.

What i find is an easy way to generate a new profile is just to add a number on the profile field of ad. so add a 1 on to the end of the path and it will generate a new profile, instead of taking ownership and renaming it. But as mentioned you will see have to remove the local profile. Best way to do is that through the profile management dialog on the system properties-> advanced using a admin user. But remember to backup the nk2 and signatures.

It actually sounds like the user is modifying the profile locally and that those changes aren't being synced back to the server.
Then, when the user logs off, the roaming profile is deleted and the server version is being restored to the PC when the user logs back on.

I have an issue, currently, where my users get sent compressed zip folders from Mac users which they unzip to the desktop. Unfortunately, I haven't locked down EFS and when the users unzip the folders everying inside it is encrypted with the user's EFS key which stops the roaming profile from syncing back to the server.

Every so often a user complains about their desktop losing stuff where their profile is reset to the server version and I look in event viewer and can see the issue. (I guess I should give this to the guy that I'm training up, to turn off EFS for users, so it doesn't sit on my list in the important but not urgent category for forever and a day.)

Sorry, I haven't read the thread thoroughly, but might the server have run out of storage space?

I experienced something similar (SBS 2003) when a user's iPhone backups from iTunes that wer ~8GB and there was enough space to save it back to the server.

All changes to all profiles were not being saved. Although the users did received a warning when logging off.
