Roaming Profiles

Hi All,
Some background info for you before I explain.

I work in a school in Bucks, we are supported by a small team at the Council who have a managed service agreement. They look after the server side of things (annoying I know!). No one knows what the problem is, what causes it or how to fix it.

Students operate under a mandatory profile, fine.
Staff all have their own roaming profile, fine.

Roaming profiles are saved onto the storage server and each user has all permissions except Full Control upon their profile folder.
My Docs is redirected and there is a log on script that maps a few other shares.

Now every so often, in no pattern at all, some users will end up with a corrupt profile. They end up with a default desktop profile which buggers the copy on the server.
Then the only way to fix it is to rebuild/restore their profile.
This is getting really annoying, its time consuming as I have to setup their Outlook details over and over again.

I guess this could be solved by not giving them access to their own profile, thus stopping them being able to screw it up. But that also breaks away from the whole point of being able to personalise the profile in the first place.
I'd rather try and fix the cause.

To be honest I cant see anything wrong and wonder if you guys have seen this before, know of the a solution.
I hope I'm not type a load of balls also.

Help is always appreciated.

Cheers!

There will be logs in event viewer that should tell you exactly what is causing it. I think it's usually ID 1500 or 1502.

Total punt on the cause, but the most common cause I've come across over the years is cached ie pages with stupidly long file names preventing the profile from being loaded.

Now you mention IE. That was mentioned as a cause a while back but nothing else came of it (from Bucks).

Did Microsoft put out a fix for it?

I will check out the logs next time someone has a crisis.

Its just becoming a complete PITA.

Ok, an update. Not a good one.

I've been talking to the guys are Bucks about applying the above policy and have been told that it has been applied to all schools at a global level.

Bugger.

We also have and issue from time to time with the students mandatory profile not loading correctly. The result being that they seem to have the local "all users" profile loaded instead.

All machines use UPHClean.

Hate profiles.
Win7 might be a good move!

I think this is the little sucker that is causing the issue. After which they also suffer some redirection errors but this could be linked to this first error.
