What a remarkable comeback. Will be great to see Robert back in F1!

Robert Kubica has agreed a deal to race for Williams in the 2019 Formula 1 season, Autosport understands.

An announcement is expected early in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend.

Williams's decision to bring Kubica into its race team means he will make an incredible return to the F1 grid eight years after the rallying accident in Italy that left him with severe arm injuries and interrupted his racing career.

Autosport learned earlier this month that the 33-year-old had moved to the top of Williams's list for its remaining 2019 vacancy and was considering a firm offer from it to race again.

Kubica had originally appeared to be set for a 2018 Williams race seat last winter.

He had first been in contention for a Renault drive after a series of summer tests, having begun to push harder for a shock F1 return following a previous motorsport comeback in rallying.

Kubica then moved into the frame at Williams late last year when Renault elected not to proceed with him.

A 2018 Williams race deal appeared to be done, before a late change of plan meant Sergey Sirotkin was brought in alongside Lance Stroll instead and Kubica ended up in a test and reserve role.

That position has allowed Williams to get to know Kubica more and assess his contribution behind the scenes, across five days of testing and two GP Friday practice sessions.

Kubica has also attracted further sponsorship from his native Poland that he can bring to Williams.

Williams is expected to announce Kubica as George Russell's 2019 team-mate in a press conference in the Abu Dhabi paddock on Thursday, at the track where he made his last F1 race start in November 2010.

Kubica, who was at the Williams factory this week conducting his regular simulator work, had also received an approach from Ferrari to become its simulator driver.

Though that would have enabled Kubica to join the team with which he had a future F1 contract prior to his devastating rally crash, he hinted in Brazil earlier this month that the prospect of racing again was potentially more tempting.

"Maybe the wish of driving and coming back to F1 is bigger than the wish of a long project. I leave a lot to personal conclusions," he told Autosport.

"When I'm saying I want to make my mind up, it's also about what I want to do with my future.

"I'm not looking only for the next three months, or one year, but what is my feeling."

I honestly thought this would never happen. Genuinely happy for him to be back in F1. I'd rank him as one of those 'what if' drivers who probably should have at least one title to their name.

It raises some questions about where Williams are getting money from next year though. Last I heard Kubica got passed over last year as Sirotkin brought about $5m more than he did, plus Stroll was paying as well. Now both of them have moved on. Russell obviously has the Mercedes connection for engine supply, but he must be brining a boat load of cash too - especially given the loss of Martini sponsorship.

Nice to have him back.

Shame he'll be in such a terrible car, unless of course they sort their **** out next season.

Great to have him back, was a driver with massive potential before his accident, hopefully can get a true read on how fast he is since accident now as the results from testing were never fully conclusive from the data that is made public.

However, given you have had Rob Smedley already jump ship before 2019 and apparent drop in funding through loss of Martini, and 2 highly backed drivers, I'm not holding out big hope for the 2019 car! Hoping to be proved wrong :)

Who's to say that a successful year for Williams proving himself doesn't lead to something better?
His generation of driver (Hamilton/Alonso/Vettel) regarded Robert as the best of all of them, if he can blow away the highly rated Russell and proves he's capable of driving the season who knows where 2020 could see him driving.

I certainly wouldn't rule him out of exceeding expectations and getting a better drive in a years time.

But I don't recall Hamilton/Alonso/Vettel saying Robert was the best, but I do remember Hamilton saying Kubica was among the best he has raced. Hamilton competed against Kubica all the way back in karting, Alonso and Vettel are bit older/younger.

Wild speculation, but where would he go? He was signed to Ferrari before he had his accident, but that's a closed door now with Leclerc and Vettel. Even if Seb moves on in a year or two I doubt he'd be on their list. Red Bull prefer to promote from the juniors. Merc is a possibility if Bottas gets the boot, which I can see happening if he has another lacklustre season and Merc don't win the WCC next year. Moving back to Renault would be a possibility, especially if they can get their act together with their cash injection for next year alongside Hulk/DannyRic.

Renault would be my guess if he had a great year but its entirely possible that he could be a very capable number 2 somewhere as well - this time next year we could be talking about Leclerc being Ferrari Number 1, could only see Merc being an option if Bottas is poor again and Lewis leaves as surely Ocon will get that seat (perhaps even during 2019 if Bottas is poor)

Sorry it was Hamilton who said it at the time - although Alonso has always rated him very highly.
BMW rated him as faster than Vettel back on 05/06

I genuinely think if Robert felt he was not up to the job - would be the first to walk away. Of all people Robert knows what he is up against; a young hungry driver...

It's great to see an experienced driver on the grid.
