Chelsea appoint Roberto Di Matteo as assistant first team coach. More from the Villas-Boas press conference now on SSN

I thought he would want to stick to being number one at a club, so an interesting move for him certainly.

Chelsea fans, what do you think?

Awesome appointment.

Chelsea legend, had West Brom playing some nice football last season and has proper experience coaching a Premiership team. Also note he likes to play attacking, attractive Football - much like Villas-Boas. It's clear Chelsea want to change how they play their football.

I wonder if AVB will finally be the man to move Chelsea away from Jose's 4-3-3? 4 managers prior to him haven't managed it.....

Excellent choice. He should complement AVB well and we should start seeing a more exciting team. This season will be very interesting.

Very good appointment. I rate Di Matteo very highly but he was very naive to try and play open attacking football in the Premiership against far superior players and teams when he was West Brom manager. Same could be said about Martinez at Wigan. Great young manager trying to play good football without the players to do so.

Di Matteo's got a lot going for him but is he just another Wilkins?

Afaik there's no previous working relationship between Vilas Boas and him so would Vilas Boas be happy to have somebody he doesn't really know as his number 2? I suspect it's just a token gesture appointment from Chelsea so that they've got somebody from the clubs past on the bench.

It's setting up nicely for Fergie to retire after winning 20th title, Mourinho to come in to Utd and set up a Utd/Chelsea Mourinho/Villas Boas battle for the 2012/13 season.

Sky would love it anyway :p
