Was just outside having a cigarette & playing with my camera, and this robin lands right in front of me. Unfortunately before i had time to photograph it in the open it hopped into a well shaded tree. And because i was hand held, needed a high ISO that has made a lot of noise. :(

Also am i right in thinking that the robin signifies the beginning of spring? I think i might of found a competition entry :p

If you want it in the competition you need to stop judges from coming in, get your thread renamed fast! Scuzidon oughta help :p

I thought robins signified winter :S

Otherwise though that is an extraordinarily good picture ( #1), I'd love to get an almost co-operative bird shot :)

#2 is distracting with the bright leaf to the left, touching the bird.

They're allowed to see it, just not comment on it, so assuming they aren't all stupid, the fact he's mentioned wanting to use it should be enough.

The "Robin Redbreast" has much folklore surrounding it and has become strongly associated with Christmas, taking a starring role on many a Christmas card. The Robin has also appeared on many Christmas postage stamps.

An old English folk tale seeks to explain the Robin's distinctive red breast. Legend has it that when Jesus was dying on the cross, the Robin, then simply brown in colour, flew to his side and sang into his ear in order to comfort him in his pain. The blood from his wounds stained the Robin's breast, and thereafter all Robins got the mark of Christ's blood upon them.

That would probably explain why they are perceived as a winter bird. After reading up they actually hate cold weather.

British Robins are mostly sedentary though a few migrate to Spain and Portugal for the winter

<--Robin expert now. :D :p

Lovely picture. the best i can get is a duck close range. but i guess its down to the fact i cant get close in shots because the lack of a telephoto lens of somesort. brilliant photo, enter it!

I really like the Robin's colours in No 2 (wheres the tail?!? - must be keeping it warm somewhere), however the background is slightly better in No 1 for me.

Very nice!!!!! :)

They're nice sharp pics but Robins say Winter Time to me not Spring Time.
I can see a Theme debarcle happening all over again. Robin's as nice as they
look are tremendously territorial and are very agressive birds. If you happen
to be a bird absentlymindedly landing in a garden because there's some grub and a Robin notices you, you'll be lucky to get out without being pecked to death !

Number 2 is the best for me :)

Great pictures, 2 is my favourite. I can never get anywhere near the one who lives in or around our garden. So I am a little green with envy. :p

I have seen it all year round, so certainly 'my' Robin is not a spring time occurance!

Both are very good.

The second one is probably better, the first one has a petal or leaf or something creeping in to the picture on the right hand side which spoils it a little for me, its a little bit distracting.
