Rockefeller: Internet is “Number One National Hazard”

According to the great-grandson John D. Rockefeller, nephew of banker David Rockefeller, and former Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller the internet represents a serious threat to national security. Rockefeller is not alone in this assessment. His belief that the internet is the “number one national hazard” to national security is shared by the former Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell and Obama’s current director Admiral Dennis C. Blair.

“It really almost makes you ask the question would it have been better if we had never invented the internet,” Rockefeller mused during the confirmation hearing of Gary Locke (see video), Obama’s choice for Commerce Secretary. He then cites a dubious figure of three million cyber “attacks” launched against the Department of Defense every day. “Everybody is attacked, anybody can do it. People say, well it’s China and Russia, but there could be some kid in Latvia doing the same thing.”

So Sen. Rockefeller claims the internet is very dangerous. I guess its time we turn it off, obviously this has nothing to do with the fact that there is freedom of speech on the internet.

I'm guessing this thread will be locked along with my other about this. I guess breaking the rules has nothing to do with the rules stated in the FAQ.

No, but the more you give, the more people will respond. Perhaps elaborate on your own opinion, maybe more sources that agree with the video? I shouldn't really have to tell you how to write your original post.

I'm scared to link a youtube video from the actual C-Span video in case it gets closed for it being classed as a "youtube thread"

I didn't see the previous thread so you may already have done this but if not it is generally better to offer some sort of context and opening for the discussion as many people won't bother/don't have time to just watch random videos and hope they are interesting.

Do you have a link to the source please? Also I'm failing to see why a kid in Latvia launching a cyber attack would be any more of an issue that China or Russia doing the same - I'm presuming of course that Russia and China would generally be better organised.

Updated the main post for you with the C-Span interview.

Internet 2, the end of the internet?

Time magazine reported last year that researchers funded by the federal government want to shut down the internet and start over, citing the fact that at the moment there are loopholes in the system whereby users cannot be tracked and traced all the time. The projects echo moves reported to clamp down on internet neutrality and even to designate a new form of the internet known as Internet 2.

In a display of bi-partisanship, there have recently been calls for all out mandatory ISP snooping on all US citizens by both Democrats and Republicans alike.

The White House's own recently de-classified strategy for "winning the war on terror" targets Internet conspiracy theories as a recruiting ground for terrorists and threatens to "diminish" their influence.

The Pentagon recently announced its effort to infiltrate the Internet and propagandize for the war on terror.

In a speech last October, Homeland Security director Michael Chertoff identified the web as a "terror training camp," through which "disaffected people living in the United States" are developing "radical ideologies and potentially violent skills." His solution is "intelligence fusion centers," staffed by Homeland Security personnel which will go into operation next year.

The U.S. Government wants to force bloggers and online grassroots activists to register and regularly report their activities to Congress. Criminal charges including a possible jail term of up to one year could be the punishment for non-compliance.

A landmark legal case on behalf of the Recording Industry Association of America and other global trade organizations seeks to criminalize all Internet file sharing of any kind as copyright infringement, effectively shutting down the world wide web - and their argument is supported by the U.S. government.

A landmark legal ruling in Sydney goes further than ever before in setting the trap door for the destruction of the Internet as we know it and the end of alternative news websites and blogs by creating the precedent that simply linking to other websites is breach of copyright and piracy.

The European Union, led by former Stalinist and potential future British Prime Minister John Reid, has also vowed to shut down "terrorists" who use the Internet to spread propaganda.

The EU data retention bill, passed last year after much controversy and with implementation tabled for late 2007, obliges telephone operators and internet service providers to store information on who called who and who emailed who for at least six months. Under this law, investigators in any EU country, and most bizarrely even in the US, can access EU citizens' data on phone calls, SMS messages, emails and instant messaging services.

The EU also recently proposed legislation that would prevent users from uploading any form of video without a license.

The US government is also funding research into social networking sites and how to gather and store personal data published on them, according to the New Scientist magazine. "At the same time, US lawmakers are attempting to force the social networking sites themselves to control the amount and kind of information that people, particularly children, can put on the sites."

There is a lot of Prison Planet links, but if you follow the link and just under the title there should be a blue hyperlink taking you to the official news source.

I've already posted this on speakers corner (http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17990559) but i'm after other peoples opinions then the normal people who visit the corner.

I'm delighted that we've got a rational video for a change

Wonder if you'd have classed it the same way if it was someone else on a video camera, reading from a news release from a non MSM media source.

This is just an interview with a US senator. He could be talking about the price of corn in Dakota for all the difference it makes to the rest of the world.

I posted this because of the complete rubbish coming out of that guys mouth. Its amazing people like him can get away with saying this.

That would depend on who they were and what they were saying.

No it wouldnt and you know it.

Every time you post something in counter to an alternative opinion you always quote MSM or Wiki. Why should independent news sources be less "credible" then ones with an agenda?

Can you be more specific?
He cites a dubious figure of three million cyber “attacks” launched against the Department of Defense every day. “Everybody is attacked, anybody can do it. People say, well it’s China and Russia, but there could be some kid in Latvia doing the same thing.”

Rockefeller’s comments reveal an astounding degree of ignorance – or if not ignorance, outright propaganda. Since the September 11, 2001, attacks the government has cranked up the fear quotient in regard to cyber attacks and so-called cyber terrorism, a virtually non-existent threat except in the minds security experts and politicians. In the years since the attacks, not one real instance of real cyberterrorism has been recorded.

BTW, is he a Stalinist?
Oh your a funny.

They're not crap, they're just misguided, and, in this case a rehash of another thread posted 90 minutes ago about the exact same topic. Oh, and it's also a cross-post.

Given the responses these threads always get (without fail), I also think they might be heading towards trolling (deliberate fishing for a response).

Firstly, please can you keep all this stuff in one place, and secondly, think before posting. Perhaps, instead of spouting someone else's work, say what you think.

Actually i expressed why i put it in 2 places, i feel that is acceptable.

The other thread i posted was in regard to a certain person saying a certain thing about something different to this topic. Please re read both posts before trying to troll.

The reason these threads head to trolling is people like you coming in with the "LOLZ" attitude.

I never claimed my OP to be my own work, i just felt it didnt look very good in [ quotes ]
