Rodent problem

I'd attempt to get rid of the infestation first as it might have been them that created it entrance and will do so again. Get rid of as many as you can then block it up when the numbers drop.

I'd suggest one of those buckets with the seesaw on the lid and bait it with your treat of choice (chocolate, peanut butter etc). The vermin climb up a ramp to the top of the bucket and they fall in. Make it a murder-bucket by filling it with water or dispense with the live mice/rats as you see fit. Poison can be a bit risky if you have pets and other wildlife around that may snack on the mice they find, plus you don't know where they go to die and rot.

Mouse traps work the best or you have the interesting fun of smells of purifying mouse courpses.

I'd not use poison because they do normally venture along the gutters and the local predators (owls etc) can pick them up.

We had a rat keep coming in over a couple of weeks. Crashed into my foot before scampering under the fridge on one occasion.

Bought a rat trap and put some lovely food inside, but it was far too clever to be caught by it. Ultimately, just had to make sure there was no accessable food, and then it stopped.

Mice on the other hand... very stupid creatures. They will happily get caught by the same trap over and over. I started recognising them, which prompted me to release them further away (my original ~100m was clearly not enough: even the club-footed one made it back!)

Rats are quite cautious and they nibble before the decide to eat things. Something todo with not being able to throw up. Anyway mice.. well peanut butter and snap!

The most I caught was 14. We have a number go houses with trees/shrubs that touch the the roof/gutter which present a route and with sheds for cover/nesting. The rest in the garage. Even found a nest of babies once in some potting fertilisers. I heard the trap go in the garage when the mum scampered off. Sad but a virulent pest that breed extremely fast. Normally it's quick but you do get the odd occasion that it's not.
