*** ROG XBOX Ally X Discussion Thread ***

Will upload to GitHub. You'll need a Pro ISO. I stripped out all my unwanted apps using OSDBuilder but this will do the same thing.

Is it an Ally X you have? (Drivers are different)
Nah got the ROG Xbox Ally X.

Will this have any issues with future updates to armory crate and the FSE do you think?

No - and from this point forward, for the foreseeable, you can just redo with Win11 26H2, 27H2, etc. g-helper can be checked and updated by running:
Code:
winget upgrade --all

Here is the repo on GitHub - I created it last night - any problems or questions, feel free to ask here or raise an Issue in GitHub:

Thanks I will definitely investigate this when I get some time.

Firmware update came out today. You need to run Windows Update AND the Armory Crate SE.

I am absolutely obsessed with my Xbox Ally X. Use it all the time at the minute. Playing Outer Worlds 2 whilst the mrs watches I'm a Celeb is perfect.

Quick 30 minute blast during lunch break on Deep Rock Galactic Survivors. Spot on.

Can the Xbox ally x act as a competent desktop? Don’t weather to build in a tiny ncase matx and stream to my iPhone/ipad or get one of these, just a lot of money with no upgrade path.

Can the memory be upgraded?

Yes, it's running a normal desktop version of Windows. Just with an gaming GUI.

Only the SSD can be upgraded.

In addition it has USB4 unlike prior Ally so you can put any number of Thunderbolt or USB docks on it.

I did this with my daughter, she switched her desktop for a handheld and a dock to monitor/keyboard etc. and uses it as a PC when she wants to do serious things.

Whilst memory is not upgradeable if you got a dock with a GPU you would free up the RAM for the system and mean it can perform better on a big screen.

These machines are plenty good enough to be a desktop machine, obviously the GPU grunt is the let down so you won't be doing gaming at any higher settings than you do on the handheld like when you dock a switch but it is still OK.

Ah, hmmm…was thinking of an egpu but so expensive

I have a decent one in the members market right now, that'll save some dough, nudge, nudge, wink, wink :) will add a 8Gb RX7600M and an extra M2 slot for storage etc, quite handy if you expect a lot of desktop use, we upgraded to a more powerful GPU dock.

Using the dock frees up RAM for system and of course allows the CPU to run rampant as it doesn't have to share power with iGPU so docked experience is a decent Desktop, FYI, this is the same GPU going into the Steam PC/Console thing. :)

I have some benchmarks in there on a handheld AokZoe 7840/780M which is only a maybe 10% slower GPU wise than the z2 extreme, In fact I had the hx370/890M which is the same as the Ally X GPU wise, here are the comparative Timespy, dock has more than double the graphics performance and with dedicated VRAM will be better in actual games at slightly higher res, never did run the dock on the 890 as I have a 4090M Occulink dock, now that was proper expensive, 4x the one I have for sale :o :D

Note the X1pro, doesn't have the same thermal capacity as a gaming handheld, it is slimmer with lower TDP.

Compare graphics score rather than overall score as differing CPU impact overall.

For some reason the eGPU won't show in this compare link if you are not logged in as me, probably confused it, some times the 3dmark hardware info thing just sees it as generic GPU when you hotswap it in, so here is a screenshot of numbers with 780M and egpu attached, the 890M and probably Ally X is ~3.5k graphics score and the eGPU is over 8K
