Are they designed to go an odd colour on puporse? :p

As a little experiment to myself when out the other night, I nabbed a filter off a mate and while half the people at the table lit up, I poked the filter in my mouth and breathed through it. This wasn't the easiest thing in the world but y'know :p

After about 5 minutes or so of breathing through it, it had gone a horrible nasty yellow/brown colour, now I know this is meant to happen but I was slightly concerned that it was discoloured so much just by 'passive' smoking.

So I was wondering if they perhaps are designed to change colour more than they really would to give the impression they are filtering crap out better?

...if you see what I mean.

It's the air going through it that discolours it...

i didn't know they could also be used by non-smokers, filtering 2nd hand smoke coming in from your surroundings!! ;-)

Its the tar and nicotine in the air getting caught in the fibers of the filter.

I know this, i'm not stupid.

The question was whether perhaps anything was put in them to cause 'extra' discolouration to give the impression they are filtering more than they are because I really didn't think there would be THAT much crap just floating about in the air.

Were you in a room where people were smoking?

Was in a pub :)

Ah ok... well in that case then yes, thats how much crap is in the air when you are around smokers, aka passive smoking ;)

Especially if it has poor air flow.

Run my experiement :D Seriously, I want to know how it comes out.

That's really quite horrible when I think about it.

I knew passive smoking was never going to do me any good but I honestly never expected there to be that much crap.
