Roman Numeral help

My dad has got a book which is laced with this one roman numeral.

MDCCCXCV1

The book is from the 1800's, so I take it the numerial is maybe a date (obviously)? I have had alook at the numerial charts on the net, but just thought id ask here to get a definate answer..

I presume you mean: MDCCCXCVI. If so, it's 1896 I believe.

VI = 5+1

Add them up, 1896.
