In all the hype and hysteria that surrounds the Medieval Total War II demo I am all here you tell you about the single best modification for Rome Total War (and Barbarian Invasion).
Rome Total Realism (RTR) Platinum Edition 1.7 Beta
1.7 Beta introduces a whole plethora of fixes and upgrades to what is commonly regarded as the best realism modification to Rome Total War.
I would strongly recommend using this mod with Barbarian Invasion over Rome Total War as it enhances the playability and makes the AI much more of a challenge, plus it allows you to use the Barbarian Invasion enhancements such as night battles and extra traits.
Installation:-
How to play RTRPE with Barbarian Invasion:
1. install Rome Total War
2. install Barbarian Invasion
3. install BARBARIAN INVASION PATCH v1.6
4. install Rome Total Realism Platinum Edition
5. right click the Barbarian Invasion icon on your desktop. Select "Properties". Edit the "Target" of this shortcut to look like this:
"C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War\RomeTW-BI.exe" -show_err -mod:
Note: I used the above location as an example. If you have the game installed somewhere else, the target will look a little different. Anyway, just add -mod: at the end of the target.
Installation Platinum Edition 1.6:
1. download Rome Total Realism Platinum Edition v1.6 Full Install from here:

Install the 1.7 Beta patch from here:

ps there are lots of other modifications that you can use in conjunction with this such as graphical upgrade packs/sound upgrades etc.
Please note the 1.7 is a BETA patch and there are still some issues to overcome, but generally it is a vast improvement over RTR Gold 1.6
