Hey.

Looking for a roof bag for my car. I have roof bars.

Needs to be water proof and be big enough to stick my 8 man tent and other camping bits. So I can free up the boot space.

Going down to the south coast next Tues. So a good 4 hours drive.

Anyone got any recommendations?

I don't mind if it sits on the roof itself, as it's wrapped and I have a non slip mat I can place it on. But it would need to be strappable to bars that go from left to right.

Thanks

instead of sitting it on the roof (if it will do that) get a plank of wood, drill some holes down each side so you can tie it down onto roof bars, then the bag can go on the plank of wood instead

That would also work.

Need to find a food bag first.

Just so many neg reviews on some.

I can't understand the storage issue, guess you might also find that you end up underfilling it so stuff might slide around a lot. Wonder if they're more targetable by thieves.
Well, i don't want it on my car all the time. So I'd have to store it. And I don't have any space to store it. So.. heh.

Oh I'm agreeing with you (sorry I can be not very clear). In my mind fabric stuff (assuming it's essentially a big duffle bag) folds down to almost nothing. Not to mention I bet roof boxes aren't dxactly light even when empty.

Yea, that's what appeals about the bag.

Rolls up and shoves on a shelf.

Just can't find any decent ones. There are some on ebay but most say its weather proof, yet then adds that when wet water can get inside... well.. that's not weather proof then is it!

Lol

Have you checked out canoing dry bags? Look for those with lashing points and then get some suitable lashing hardware if you're not familiar with suitable knots.

Brands like Ortleib and Exped. They're designed to keep your gear dry in complete submersion in water, so must work well for your purposes too.

Roof boxes weigh next to nothing when empty, I regularly take mine on and off and the only challenge is the sheer size and awkwardness of the thing! Storage is a real issue if you don't have a garage or shed though and even then they eat space.

Fair enough, I always assumed they weighed a bit. I can understand the awkwardness though, at some point I want to fit a roof rack and bikes to my car:p.
