Rooney's Derby Goal

It's been quite some time [several seasons?] since we've had a Rooney wow moment. Despite the glut of goals of last season we didn't see anything like that....

It's just because people hate Rooney, I'm not his biggest fan by any means but I'll put up with him on my team :p

If Messi had just done that in the dying stages of El Classico, certain people in this thread would have been kissing his feet (even more) :)

Don't get me wrong. I am a massive Rooney fan, even though I support Everton. I am a bit disheartened with his performances over the last 9-12 months. His goal at the weekend was a good goal. It wasn't his best. It was a good goal, that's it. He very nearly arsed up the approach play, luckily the rest of the team compensated! (Which is the wrong way round for a player with his potential)

I have scored overhead kicks before, admittedly not in the premier league, but mine were in a 5-a-side size goal. They aren't that hard, you just have to have the balls to go for a shot where you're upside down for about 1/2 the shot and be prepared for the bump as you land!

The thing is, Rooney was utter pap at the world cup. He's not playing well now and needs a size 9 up his chuff if he's to perform anywhere near his capability.

Aye, best goal but nobody talks about him at Everton, dont know why.

It probably isn't mentioned often for the same reason that people don't mention young players at their previous clubs. Walcott and Southampton isn't talked about much, if at all for example. Rooney only played for them for a couple of seasons when he was almost pure potential, now he's realising/realised that potential of course he is going to be talked about more. Not to mention Man Utd are probably the most recognised football club in the world, who the **** cares about Everton outside of Liverpool, apart from Azza?

56 seconds in, thought that was pretty wow.

Nah I know what Ratbag means, in Rooney's first season he hit two great volleys, one against Middlesbrough and one against Newcastle and in the same FA Cup ties against Boro he lobbed their keeper from miles out

In the 06/07 season against Portsmouth he scored a great chip against James

In the 07/08 season he scored what I believe is still his last goal out side of the box for us against Newcastle away

All those were the types of goals you expected from the Rooney that broke through at Everton, tore France apart in the Euro's and scored a hat trick on his United debut. These days he's probably a more complete goal scorer as proved by his lack of strikes outside of the area but the goal against City was Rooney of old

Whether people like it or not it'll be goal of the season and rightly so

Its not just the flamboyancy of the o/head kick that makes it such a goal, its the impact on the game and the time in which it came which makes it so impressive.

Only seen the Rooney one a few times, so don't know if he shinned it and got lucky etc. as I haven't really seen. Do think I prefer the one in the CL from Hapoel a few months ago though, that stunned me more and looked better

If he hadn't shinned it it might well have missed so you could say it was rather fortunate. I think his volley against Newcastle was far more impressive.
