"Rooted maps" - how do I make them?

lol that image above is stupid, so Alaska contributes nearly half of all US box office takings.

Data is clearly based upon countries, Alaska is part of the USA, ie. not a seperate country per say.

Think of it like Northern Ireland being grouped under UK and blown beyond proportions just to represent the UK figure.
 
Hmm, thanks for the replies guys - I was hoping not to have to mess about with image editors or buy complex tools... something simple that would allow me to just plug in some country data and get a pretty picture would be ace :p

Any more ideas?

ask the bloke that made it how he did it?
 
They're called Cartograms which should help you find tools for the job. Google seems to have a variety although the better ones seem to be plugins for other map making software.

I did find an online one which looks pretty basic but might meet your needs?
