I'm too scared to play cd's on my pc anymore and i don't know what to look out for. I got 2 new cds and have now read about this and am not sure wether to play them or not and i don't have a good stereo to listen to them on at the moment.

Are the cds that have these rookits on are they the ones with the copy protection logo on and anything with a seperate player for the music?

p.s I did a reformat and haven't played any since

Also does holding down shift actually stop everything from installing even if afterwards you opened your own player and opened the cd from there?

Simple solution - disable autorun for the drive.

See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/q155217? for info.

Then once the disk's inside, you can just run whatever program you use to rip the CD and thereby ignore any executable on the disk. Some copy protection might stop you from being able to play the disk at all, but you won't get anything nasty.

(also bear in mind that there's really nothing to be scared of, the CDs in question recently were a particular few from Sony, I don't think anyone else will dare do anything too similar in the near future!)

Im sure windows used to have a checkbox for disabling autorun in the properties window of a drive. Or am I just dreaming?
